Nolan’s Odyssey between epic success and controversy

The Odyssey is one of the most epic historical epics, globally recognized. The Greek tale is one of the two works of Homer. This is one of the oldest pieces of literature we have today, and it is still famous.

This year, we got Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of this epic, featuring Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, and Charlize Theron. The director and the cast themselves were enough to hype anyone. On top of this, they were set to recreate the epic of The Odyssey. The buzz was already on the seventh sky.

On July 17, 2026, Nolan’s The Odyssey was released in the United States and the United Kingdom. The Odyssey was made with a budget of 250 million USD. The Odyssey made an epic start at the domestic box office with 123.5 to 124.5 million USD, while it earned 264 million USD internationally in its first week, ahead of The Dark Knight Rises. It became Nolan’s biggest opening ever. In the second and third weeks, the film managed a decent run and added over 140 million USD. At one stage, it was expected that it would easily reach 1.3 billion USD. But at the end of July, we got Spider-Man: Brand New Day, where a gradual drop of 43% occurred in the film's collection. However, it is still climbing toward 1 billion USD. At present, The Odyssey's collection is 911 million USD.

Nolan’s The Odyssey was a great venture at the box office, but it faced backlash from casting to release. From the characters to the dialogue, even the language was criticized. Many big names also spoke up about this film.

Casting and characters

From the moment Black actress Lupita Nyong’o was finalized as Helen of Troy (whom Homer called "white-armed"), the character had traditionally been portrayed as a European beauty, often blonde. Critics called the casting inappropriate, including Elon Musk and commentator Matt Walsh.

Following this, transgender actor Elliot Page was cast as Sinon, a soldier who helps trick Troy with the Wooden Horse. Early on, it was claimed that he was playing Achilles. This was even more controversial, but after the character was confirmed, the criticism kept growing.

Travis Scott, as one of the characters, faced the most satirical backlash. He is playing the bard/poet Demodocus. Firstly, it was claimed to be stunt casting, and many believed it was anachronistic.

A large number of people on social media complained about the lack of Greek actors, with only a few names confirmed in tiny roles. The issue was not the availability of Greek actors in Hollywood, as the list is vast.

Similarly, the issue was raised regarding Matt Damon as Odysseus, as many believed he was not suitable. The reason was simple: he does not look like a classic Mediterranean. Director Nolan defended all his casting choices, and somewhere this paid off as the film went on to earn a massive collection.

Languages and setups

One of the major issues with the casting was the language and accents. Many of the actors cast were not from Greek or Mediterranean roots. That is why the difference in dialects was a major drawback for the film. Matt Damon’s Odysseus was prominent in this issue, where the powerful speeches of Odysseus were not as effective with an American accent. The issue continued with British actors like Tom Holland and Robert Pattinson.

Production design, sets, costumes, ships

Most fans were sure that Nolan would take care of this section. He is more often known for his practical approach. They expected practical sets and better production values. But it all fell short when the armor and helmets felt like superhero costumes, not even close to the medieval ages. Bronze Age Mycenaean armor should have been brighter bronze, not dark Iron Age.

One of the ships used was a modern construction that heavily resembled the Viking longship Draken Harald Hårfagre. It felt more Scandinavian than ancient Greek galleys or triremes.

Overall, the costumes were seen as grim and dark rather than bright and colorful like those of the Bronze Age. Costume designer Ellen Mirojnick was heavily criticized for her work. Pants and certain clothing styles did not feel like those of ancient Greeks.

On top of that, Nolan used most of the locations in the Western Sahara region of Dakhla, which includes the White Dune. This territory has been under Moroccan control since the 1970s. It is a disputed region under international law.

Film presence

Overall, the film's presence, along with all the controversies, worked at the box office. The collections are proof of that, and it is still running in many cinemas despite the epic run of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The Odyssey also benefited Greek culture, with a massive 75% jump in sales of The Odyssey book. It also drove many events and language-related searches. Additionally, the controversies worked in Nolan’s favor by creating extra hype and pre-release buzz.

Nolan’s The Odyssey worked as a rare piece of modern monoculture. It was widely discussed across social media without any division between age groups. It set a milestone for new filmmakers and, somewhere, created fears among audiences who love to watch authentic historical and fictional works.
