Many couples dream of the perfect honeymoon, a magical and memorable moment to begin their life together. This is why many seek out famous destinations: their status, the scenery, or simply their popularity on social media. Indeed, the most sought-after honeymoon destinations like Paris, Santorini, or the Maldives are wonderful and highly valued; however, such places require a significant financial outlay, which doesn't reflect the reality for many.
Weddings are expensive, not to mention the costs of moving into a new home, the engagement party, paperwork, etc. For these reasons, many couples seek cheaper alternatives for their honeymoon, without necessarily losing the sparkle of this very important occasion. So perhaps it's time to forget about these famous places for a while and refocus on places we've never considered before.
Let's also set aside this social pressure around Instagrammable destinations. There's too much focus on the photos couples can take and how they'll perform online, and we lose sight of the essence of a honeymoon, which is nothing more than enjoying time with your partner and living in the moment, not for an Instagram like. The romance and real connection on a honeymoon don't depend on the place's fame; they depend on the couple. The idea that spending a honeymoon in the Maldives is more romantic or magical than in the mountains, for example, is mistaken.
There are many wonderful and budget-friendly destinations that couples can consider as alternatives. Of course, it all depends on taste and what kind of experience the couple is looking for. With that in mind, I've selected some destinations that are off the beaten path but deliver everything you'd expect from a honeymoon—and perhaps even more.
Lofoten Islands
Our first destination is within a country that very few people would consider for their honeymoon. Perhaps due to the cold, distance, or being less known, the Lofoten Islands are actually an archipelago located in the county of Nordland in Norway. Despite being located within the Arctic Circle, the region experiences temperature variations, making it suitable for different types of weather experiences.
The archipelago consists of seven main islands: Austvågøya, Gimsøya, Vestvågøy, Flakstadøya, Moskenesøya, Vaerøy, and Røst. Mountains, fjords, bays with colourful wooden houses, and charming, picturesque fishing villages characterise the landscape. Fishing is one of the island's main economic activities, and cod is the main ingredient in its cuisine. In the Lofoten Islands, it's possible to observe the famous Northern Lights in winter and the midnight sun phenomenon in summer, which can make the honeymoon even more unique and special.
To reach the islands, it is necessary to fly to Oslo and then take a domestic flight to Bodø, Narvik, Svolvær, or Leknes. It is also possible to access the region by car, as it has a network of underwater tunnels and bridges that connect the islands. There are also regular ferries that make the crossing, but it's worth checking the frequency, especially in winter. Despite being a little remote, the locals still strongly maintain their fishing tradition and the Viking influence of the place. Cultural events reinforce local identity and attract tourists seeking authentic experiences. In addition, it's possible to visit museums, go birdwatching, fish, hike, and even surf at one of the region's most famous beaches, Unstad Beach.
This is an ideal destination for couples looking for an authentic experience, completely different from what they might expect from a honeymoon. It’s a place that combines tranquillity, a slower pace of life, and a deep connection to local culture — all without the crowds and chaos of more touristy spots. Here, couples can connect in a more relaxed way while experiencing the very best of Norway: dramatic nature, rare natural phenomena, genuine tranquillity, and intimate experiences.
Cadaqués
Our other non-traditional destination is located in Spain on the Cap de Creus peninsula, in the province of Girona, autonomous community of Catalonia. Cadaqués is a port city located on the Costa Brava coast, also known as Cap de Quers by some people. Although somewhat isolated, this seaside town is approximately 75 km from Girona and 170 km from Barcelona, making it ideal for exploring by car.
The Mediterranean atmosphere of the region is surprising, with its rocky coastline and beautiful beaches with calm and crystal-clear waters. Platja des Calders and Platja Ses Oliveres are among the best, worth visiting to relax on a sunny day. The Cap de Creus Natural Park is enchanting for its natural landscape, attracting tourists seeking comfort and beauty in nature. The city's historic centre breathes art, culture, and architecture. Many famous painters and artists were inspired by Cadaqués, the most famous of them being Salvador Dalí, who even owned a house in the area known as the Salvador Dalí House-Museum today.
The local cuisine is rich in fresh seafood, and charming, traditional restaurants overlook the bay. Cadaqués offers an intimate and very romantic experience, all while retaining the charm of the Spanish Mediterranean. On their honeymoon, the couple can enjoy the local culture and create wonderful memories, all at a leisurely pace among white houses with colourful doors and narrow streets in the city centre.
Strolling through the town centre to take in the culture and handcrafted products on offer; visiting Salvador Dalí's house in Portlligat; enjoying the beaches; watching the sunset at the town's lighthouse; having dinner by the sea, among other wonders the place offers. Cadaqués is a captivating and unique Mediterranean destination that definitely cultivates love, connection, art, and history. Is there a more romantic and enchanting setting for a honeymoon?
Kotor
Our next destination has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, and it looks like it came straight out of a mediaeval fairy tale. Discover Kotor, a city set on Montenegro’s Adriatic coast, nestled between limestone mountains and the deep blue waters of the Bay of Kotor. Famous for its turquoise-blue caves, mediaeval alleyways, breathtaking fjords, and incredible bars and restaurants. All this with the presence of cats. Yes, cats are everywhere, and isn't that lovely?
Often described as such, Kotor does not disappoint couples seeking a historical, beautiful, and intimate experience that is much cheaper than other European destinations. To reach Kotor by air, the best option is to land at Tivat Airport, which is only 10 minutes from the city, Podgorica Airport, just 1 hour and 30 minutes away by car, or Dubrovnik Airport, which is almost the same distance. Many tourists end up including the city as a stop on their road trips.
A time capsule locked away by its architecture, Kotor truly reflects the natural beauty of the Balkans, with its mountains covered in lush green vegetation contrasting with the sea and the picturesque mediaeval-style houses. The city receives tourists year-round, but the most recommended period is the summer, when the city is vibrant and colourful, with exciting nightlife and inviting beaches.
In Kotor, honeymooning couples can include in their itinerary a walk through the old town, with its historic churches such as the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon, consecrated in 1166. It's also possible to explore ancient squares and Venetian-style palaces, get lost among the preserved mediaeval streets and walls, and visit the Maritime Museum of Montenegro. Not to mention the boat trips in the Bay of Kotor, where you can visit the Blue Grottoes, underwater caves, and other attractions.
Kotor also has a very interesting and cute four-legged friend. Cats are considered a cultural symbol of the city, both because they were introduced in ancient times as a way to control rats in the port area and because they found perfect environments to live in among the alleys and hidden corners of the city. Cats were and still are welcomed by the population, who care for them and are very proud of them, making this four-legged friend part of society. This is not surprising when we discover that the city has the Kotor Cat Museum.
A honeymoon in Kotor tends to have a special touch due to its historical significance and cultural immersion in the typical, calm, and welcoming lifestyle of the locals. Here, couples have a variety of activities and places to visit, discovering the magic of the Balkans. In Kotor, every sunset over the bay feels private, like the whole place was made just for two.
Lefkada
Another destination that's well worth considering for a honeymoon is Greece. Don't worry; we're not talking about Mykonos or Santorini, but rather one of the most beautiful islands in the Ionian Sea – Lefkada. Located between Corfu and Kefalonia, Lefkada is a full surprise because it retains the beauty of the Greek Mediterranean and is a more budget-friendly option than other famous Greek islands.
The closest airport to the island is Aktion Airport (PVK), located in Preveza, just a 20-minute drive away. The island is also connected to the mainland by a bridge, which greatly facilitates travel by bus and especially by car.
The island is famous for its idyllic beaches, especially in the summer when the crystal-clear blue water contrasts with the white sand and cliffs. Among the most visited are Porto Katsiki, Egremni Beach, Megali Petra, Gialos, Agios Ioannis, and Kathisma Beach. All have contrasting characteristics, but each possesses enchanting features.
However, Lefkada is much more than other Greek islands. It's possible to book boat trips to other small islands, go hiking, and visit waterfalls for those who don't prefer the beach so much. The most famous is near Nydri and is called Dimosari Waterfall, perfect for quieter, less crowded swims. Ideal for visiting between May and October, Lefkada surprises with its variety of itineraries. Another possibility is to visit the countryside and explore the traditional village of Karya, famous for its crafts and local cuisine.
Other worthwhile tourist attractions during a honeymoon include visiting the Eglouvi plateau and its lentil fields, the Faneromeni monastery, the Santa Mura fortress, the lighthouse, and the Temple of Apollo at Cape Lefkada. All this without even mentioning the charm of the city itself, local handicrafts, numerous seaside restaurants, and the incredible Greek cuisine. A honeymoon in Greece is already romantic and a truly memorable experience; though, by choosing Lefkada, the couple will have the full Greek experience with fairer prices, fewer crowds, and an itinerary full of diversity and beauty.
Hoi An
The last destination on our fantastic list is unlike any other. Located on the central coast of Vietnam, the city of Hoi An is the best representation of a spectacular place with great value for money. Despite being on the Asian continent and far from Europe, visiting Hoi An is worth every second.
Due to the distance, airfares can be quite expensive compared to other destinations within the Schengen area; however, thanks to the exchange rate between the euro and the Vietnamese dong, expenses for food, accommodation, and activities drop significantly. The best way to reach Hoi An is via Da Nang Airport, which is approximately 30km from the city and costs no more than 25 euros for a car or van trip.
Hoi An boasts over 2,000 years of history, and its preserved colonial architecture, vibrant markets, colourful streets, and blend of Japanese, Chinese, French, and Vietnamese influences make it a unique city. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, Hoi An is known worldwide as the City of Lanterns, a spectacle of colourful silk lanterns that adorn its streets, restaurants, and canals.
Hoi An has a tropical climate, and the best months to visit are between January and August. That way, the couple can stroll around and enjoy the best the city has to offer without worrying about the torrential rains that usually occur in Southeast Asia. Hoi An's old city offers many shops, cafes, restaurants, and temples open to visit. Every corner of the city features architecture and details that impress with its rich history and culture.
Tourists can also enjoy the local beaches; the most famous are Cua Dai Beach and An Bang Beach, both with soft sand and clear turquoise waters, perfect for practising water sports. There are alternative tours, such as visits to the My Son archaeological site and the Cham Islands archipelago. One of the strong points, not only of the city but also of the entire country, is Vietnamese cuisine, full of complex, flavourful, and healthy options. All this at a very low price, so if the couple is looking for a great gastronomic experience on their honeymoon, Hoi An will not disappoint.
By choosing this honeymoon destination, the couple will enjoy not only a rich gastronomic experience but also a deep immersion in Asian culture and centuries of history. Definitely one of the most incredible destinations a couple can choose.
All the destinations mentioned on our list were chosen so that the couple can make the most of their honeymoon experience, the feeling of romance, and intense connection. Although not as famous or sought-after, these honeymoon destinations have so many positive aspects that it becomes impossible to ignore them.
One of the things couples seek most during this experience is privacy, that feeling that only the two of them exist in the world. Places with fewer crowds and commotion give newlyweds a greater sense of exclusivity. Not that there aren't people in these places—there are, and more and more people are visiting—but if we compare them to Paris or the Maldives, our 5 destinations stand out in this aspect.
Another positive aspect is the authenticity of these places. It is true that many destinations in Greece and Spain are highly popular and often heavily promoted, but places such as Cadaqués, Lefkada, Kotor, the Lofoten Islands, and Hoi An offer a different kind of appeal. While many famous destinations are undeniably beautiful and well known, there is still a sense of discovery in exploring places that are less expected and more understated. This openness to the unfamiliar allows couples to experience their honeymoon in a more personal and meaningful way.
As mentioned earlier, affordability is one of the main advantages of these destinations. Of course, the overall cost of the trip depends greatly on each couple’s preferences — from the type of accommodation and dining choices to whether they choose to rent a car or explore on foot. Still, what these destinations have in common is a strong balance between experience and cost when compared to more traditional honeymoon spots. Ultimately, they offer the chance to enjoy a memorable honeymoon filled with new experiences, lasting memories, and romance without excessive expenses.
Choosing a destination off the beaten path also takes the pressure off couples to have the perfect trip. It needs to be perfect for them, not for others or, much less, for the internet. Yes, I know it's essential to capture the moments for such a special occasion, but many people mistakenly believe that the dream honeymoon takes place in a viral location. The places mentioned are equally beautiful, even with charms different from what one might expect.
In the end, the honeymoon doesn't need to be perfect — it needs to be yours. It's not about the five-star hotel or the most iconic blue seas in the world, nor about what fits on Instagram, but about the heart itself. There can be mishaps, wrong turns, and even unexpected rain along the way. Because the honeymoon becomes a memory when the simple becomes extraordinary — and love transforms any place into a special destination. And that's when the trip becomes the beginning of life together.
