Cerebro(s) is an exhibition composed of more than 150 pieces, including contemporary art installations, audiovisual works, items from historical collections, and the results of scientific research projects focused on this fascinating organ.
The exhibition immerses visitors in both the anatomy of the brain and everything it produces: consciousness, abstract thought, language, imagination, dreams, and memory. It also explores other kinds of minds beyond the human—artificial, animal, and collective intelligences, as well as those of organisms without brains. Why do brains exist? Where does consciousness come from? And creativity? What happens when the mind becomes ill? Can intelligent machines be created? What can we learn from the collective intelligence of ants? Cerebro(s) delves into these questions and many more through an exploration of the rich landscape of cognition and its historical development, from natural systems to those created by humans. Through a journey that combines historical, scientific, and artistic material—and poses open-ended questions to visitors—the exhibition challenges our understanding of conscious experience and examines what may occur when it is interrupted or deteriorates.
Since its presentation in 2022 at the CCCB (Barcelona) and Espacio Fundación Telefónica (Madrid), the exhibition was shown in 2023 at the Museo San Telmo (San Sebastián) and in 2024 at the Centro de Historias de Zaragoza, receiving a strong public response. More than 250,000 visitors have already experienced this clear, accessible, and traveling exhibition, which involves an extensive network of researchers, creators, and thinkers.
The exhibition is produced by the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB), Fundación Telefónica, the Wellcome Collection, and the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (MICIU), and curated by physicist and biologist Ricard Solé and Emily Sargent, Head of Exhibitions at the Wellcome Collection.
