The United States of America is in trouble. The Trump administration is ruled by a mad king and his obedient minions. Day by day, he rules on the basis of whim and insult. He is powerful in his role as President of the U.S. and thinks he is all-knowing and wise, according to his latest and increasingly frequent Truth Social bleats.

He embarrasses himself and the United States at the United Nations before world leaders. DJT is certain that climate change is a myth as global climate conditions worsen and as China assumes the position of global leadership via renewable development globally in solar panels, wind farms, electric vehicles, and more.

For DJT, it is increasingly clear that the man is mentally incompetent. It is a matter of time until Vice President J.D. Vance and a simple majority of the cabinet invoke the 25th Amendment to the Constitution to replace the mad king. The 25th Amendment wisely states that a “majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such body as Congress may by law provide” issue a written declaration that the president is unable to discharge his duties.

Note that if JD Vance does not act, Congress can vote to remove the president at any time to save us from the mad king. For example, if the Republican Congress does not act as Trump becomes increasingly daffy, it is possible that after the 2026 election landslide, a Democratic victory could invoke the 25th Amendment. In my view, the 25th Amendment is far preferable to impeachment. The man is a lunatic, and the 25th Amendment is meant to deal with a mad king as a clearly mentally unbalanced mad fool.

It’s important to note that a Trump-appointed Judge Karin Immergut from Trump’s first term ruled in 2025 against Trump’s attempt to militarize Oregon’s National Guard. “This country has a longstanding and foundational tradition of resistance to government overreach, especially in the form of military intrusion into civil affairs,” Immergut wrote. She continued, “This historical tradition boils down to a simple proposition: this is a nation of Constitutional law, not martial law.”

It is possible that politicians will fail to remove the mad king despite his increasingly violent and murderous language and the increasing institution of Marshall law and dictatorship.

Yes, it is possible that Trump, however unbalanced mentally, can continue to rule. He threatens to invoke the Insurrection Act in his war against Democratic led states and his desire to unleash federalized National Guard and then the U.S.military against Blue states. Trump now threatens the arrest of Blue state governors and mayors because they will not welcome federalized National Guard forces to stop “crime” that is at historically low levels and dropping.

The Trump majority Supreme Court has been largely supportive of Trump's outrages, until even for them the mad king’s excesses are a bridge too far. Trump’s desire to apply the Insurrection Act multiple times would mean choosing martial law instead of Constitutional law in a Trump dictatorship. The economy continues to weaken for the mad king, which makes things more difficult to resist elected anti-Trump congressional power in 2026. Unless, of course, the mad king can stop or otherwise manipulate the 2026 elections.

Constitutional alternatives

A potential constitutional alternative advanced by 34 of the states can require a new constitutional convention. As of 2025, 19 states have already voted for a new constitutional convention. Article 5 of the Constitution permits votes by Congress to amend the Constitution. This represents the only way amendments have seceded. The idea that states may take the lead in Constitutional restructuring is a means to both resolve the problem of DJT and appeal to the long-range fundamental problems of the US as ga lobal military leader armed with $trillions of weapons, both conventional and nuclear.

The states, both Red and Blue both find themselves in a common position. Rich states, both Red and Blue, fund themselves by paying large amounts of taxes used to subsidize poorer states, which are typically red states. Life under Trump has become an intolerable imposition of Trump rules. Trump is imposing Federal military law on both Red and Blue states.

Trump is forcing states to cooperate with the imposition of ICE to deport millions of American workers. This is far from a goal to deport criminals, but instead a plan to banish millions of American workers. Enormous pressure has been put on communities and businesses.

ICE has become an unaccountable secret police force to focus arrest on brown skinned residents whose “crime” is working for a living. This is a problem in both big cities and small towns, where millions of workers and their families are disappearing. The “success” of these raids will have enormous effects on a large number of workers and their businesses. Millions of farmers, fishers, food processing workers, restaurant workers, construction workers, healthcare workers, and manufacturing workers are losing jobs and businesses. Large corporations like Uber and FedEx are concerned.

I worked at a typical solar development farm. A large percentage of the men and women who took care of the cows were brown skinned workers from South America. It was hard work that required lots of skill to keep the cows healthy and happy. Without the help of migrant workers, the farmer would lose much of his staff. There will be few, if any, replacements. Many American businesses will simply contract or fail. When ICE raids a local restaurant, the restaurant workers lose their jobs and maybe their homes. The restaurant often closes. There is strong motivation to stop the madness.

States may make common cause to improve businesses and working conditions. Red states and Blue states, poor states and rich states can cooperate sharing under a new constitutional order where states can share without paying enormous taxes to support trillions of military expenses.

The U.S. does not need to spend trillions a year on war and the military. A sane program is a reasonable defense budget that is a small fraction of what we globally squander. We will have more than enough to defend ourselves against any enemy, foreign and domestic. Under Trump, states find themselves under attack by a man who wants to bring fear to American cities. Under a state-driven system, states would reasonably share revenue, paying far less than current amounts. States can cooperate and affiliate on what they find best. Let the states start talking and agree on what’s best for them.

We do not need a war or Trump tyranny.

Conclusion

Donald Trump is an outlier, but his ability to be elected twice is a clear warning that the age of U.S. global power is waning. The rich have gotten enormously richer while the middle class is vanishing, and for the poor, a social safety net is disappearing. Trump, in his second term, seeks enormous personal wealth. The system is broken. The opportunity for a new, powerful American democracy can rest in the hands of states and local government. A new state-driven constitutional convention is the tool for compromise and rebirth, and fairness for all. States as diverse and as rich as California and as small in population as Wyoming can make common cause for the benefit of all. Much of the national government has become dead weight, expending huge amounts on war and making the rich even richer. Enough. As a democracy, we can do better. It’s up to all of us to craft a new perfect union.
