Underdogs is pleased to announce Broken vision, the first solo exhibition by Paul Insect in Portugal. Opening on 5 September from 6 to 9pm and on view until 1 November 2025, the exhibition brings together 22 new and original works that explore the British artist’s unmistakable visual universe, where collage, graphic symbolism, and a critical approach to contemporary life intersect.
Recognised as one of the most enigmatic and influential figures in contemporary British art, Paul Insect first came to prominence in the 1990s for his decisive contribution to London’s street art scene. With a career firmly established on the international circuit, he has developed a unique visual language characterised by layered graphic compositions, the use of a wide variety of materials and techniques, and an aesthetic that oscillates between craft and provocation. His work is represented in significant collections and has been exhibited in institutions and galleries worldwide. Remaining true to the subversive spirit of his trajectory, the artist preserves his anonymity, appearing in public with his face covered, allowing the work to speak for itself.
Broken vision introduces a new series of works – created especially for the exhibition – where fragmentation, irony, and social critique converge. The figures that populate his compositions evoke masked characters, reminiscent of theatre or caricature. Executed with great technical precision, the paintings stem from manual methods such as dotwork, referencing photocopies and screen-printing processes, evoking the aesthetics of posters and graphic reproducibility. Through cut-out eyes and mouths, Paul Insect builds a visual commentary on information overload and the noise of appearances, tackling themes such as surveillance, identity, and representation. At the same time, he restores the imperfect charm of the handmade gesture, which grants his compositions a distinctive and tactile dimension.
In line with the exhibition’s themes, two limited editions will also be released, extending this visual language and amplifying the creative dialogue proposed by the artist. The editions will be available from 3 September, exclusively through Underdogs.
The exhibition will also be accompanied by an online viewing room on the Underdogs website, available from 3 September – two days before the opening. This digital platform will allow the public to explore and acquire all the unique works, as well as the limited editions, providing a complementary and accessible experience from anywhere.
With Broken vision, Underdogs reinforces its commitment to promoting internationally renowned artists, building bridges between contemporary practices and diverse audiences through a programme that includes exhibitions, limited editions, public art interventions, and commissioned projects.
