I watched all seven episodes of the second season. Here is an explanation of how to play the games that appear during this season.
The long-anticipated second season of Squid Game has been released. Along with the new episodes are new games that are just as terrifying as the first season. I have compiled a list of all of the games that made an appearance this season, including ones we saw in the first season.
Red light, green light
Young-hee is the robot doll we saw in the first season. She makes another appearance this season and is just as ruthless. Her eyes are able to track the motion of the players in order to eliminate those who move when they are not supposed to.
Six-legged pentathlon
In the second season, players form groups to compete in different events while their legs are tied together. They must walk around the course while completing each game as soon as possible.
The first game is Ddakji, which we also saw in the first season. Gong Yoo, The Recruiter, delivered an amazing performance last season when we first saw him playing the game at the subway station. In Ddakji, the throwing player must flip over the tile of the non-throwing player. In the second season, the throwing player may not advance to the next event until they can flip over the tile that is on the ground.
The next event is Biseokchigi or “Flying Stone.” In this game, the player must attempt to hit a stone from a distance by throwing another stone. The player must stand before a designated line and hit the stone from that distance. The fact that the players’ legs are tied together makes these events even more difficult. If the throwing player misses, the entire group loses time collecting the stone and setting up before the line again.
The third game is Gonggi, which is played with a set of small stones. The player first scatters the stones in front of them. Then, they throw one stone in the air, pick up one of the stones on the ground, and catch the one they have just tossed in the air. The steps are then repeated until all the stones are caught. After each round, the number of stones that must be picked up increases. Once all the stones are in the player’s hand, they toss the stones up and make them land on the back of their hand. Then, they toss those stones in the air and try to grab all of them in the air.
The fourth event is Paengi Chigi or “Spinning Top.” After a player wraps the string around a top, they must launch it in the air in a way that makes the top land while spinning. Winding up the string takes time, and if the top does not land properly, then the player must start all over again.
The fifth event is Jegichagi, during which a player must use one foot to kick the jegi in the air five times and avoid having it hit the ground. The players must finish the games within a time limit. The losing groups are eliminated.
Mingle
One of the most terrifying episodes to watch was the “Mingle” game. All the players are gathered on a spinning platform that resembles a carousel. Music plays in the background while the platform moves. When the platform stops, a number is called out. This is the number that players must form into groups by entering separate rooms and closing the door behind them in time. The players who are unable to join a group and fail to make it into a room with the correct number of players are eliminated.
Special Game
There is also a “Special Game” that occurs in both the first and second seasons. A fight breaks out in the players’ dormitory. Players either hide, run, or attack one another. Before the guards intervene, several players are killed.
Season 3 is set to release in 2025, and I’m curious about what other games Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator of Squid Game, will introduce. Hwang is a South Korean film director, producer, and screenwriter. He won an Emmy for Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series for the first season’s Red Light, Green Light episode. Lee Jung-jae, Squid Game’s main character, won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his performance in the first season.
The first season was shocking, and the second season also comes with surprising twists. You will also meet new characters who participate in the games. Although Gong Yoo, The Recruiter, was not a part of the games, his terrific performance in the second season was unforgettably frightening. The final episode ends with a cliffhanger, so I will be looking forward to the next season as soon as I see it on Netflix.
