Between

annex14 is pleased to present Between, an exhibition bringing together new works by Paul Czerlitzki (b. 1986) with selected ceramic works by Margrit Linck (1897–1983). Conceived as a dialogue across medium and generation, the exhibition reflects on spaces in between: painting and object, surface and depth, control and chance, material presence and trace.

At the centre of the exhibition are seven new works by Paul Czerlitzki. Developed through a precise yet open-ended process, these paintings emerge from the interaction of canvas, pigment, colour, time and the conditions of the surrounding space. Rather than presenting painting as a fixed image, Czerlitzki allows it to appear as the result of transfer, accumulation and transformation. His works register residues of action, traces of contact and moments in which intention gives way to circumstance.

Canvas, in Czerlitzki’s work, is never merely a support. It functions as filter, membrane, imprint and archive. Colour is experienced as matter, layered, absorbed and deepened. Fine structures and subtle marks draw the eye across and into the surface, where depth arises through the physical behaviour of pigment and fabric. In this suspended state, between painting and process, image and object, the works acquire their quiet intensity.

Margrit Linck’s selected terracotta objects and figures, dating from the 1940s to the 1970s, form a distinct yet resonant counterpart. Moving between vessel, sculpture and anthropomorphic form, they bear the marks of modelling, firing, painting and time. Linck’s works introduce a bodily and spatial presence that extends the exhibition’s concern with material transformation.

Between brings together two artistic positions that differ in medium, generation and language, yet share a sensitivity to process, material and states of transition. The exhibition asks what a work may hold, what it may relinquish, and how it opens a space between itself, the room and the viewer.
