Gonçalo Sena lives in Lisbon and works in the fields of sculpture, drawing, installation and publishing. Using drawing as a starting point, Sena’s practice develops through material and spatial processes, resulting in sculptures, drawings, temporary structures, printed matter, site-specific interventions and displaced environments. The vocabulary of each work and installation derives from an ecosystem of non-functional relations between everyday objects, industrial materials and organic elements – all apparently immutable, yet, all in constant transformation.
Sena shows regularly since 2007 in institutions, galleries and artist-run-spaces, such as: Estufa Fria de Lisboa, MAC/CCB, MAAT, SNBA, Cordoaria Nacional, Galeria Zé dos Bois, in Lisbon; Casa da Cerca, in Almada; Galeria Municipal do Porto, A Certain Lack of Coherence, in Porto; CA2M, CentroCentro, Sala de Arte Joven, Fundació Santander, Galería Ehrhardt Flórez, in Madrid; Can Felipa Art Visuals, in Barcelona; 12ª Bienal de Arte de Lanzarote; +DEDE, District, Kunstraum Botschaft Camões, IG Metal, in Berlin; Oldenburger Kunstverein; Hot Wheels, Athens; Alta Art Space, Malmö; Fondazione Antonio Ratti, Como; Palais de Tokyo, Paris; among others. In parallel to his artistic practice, Sena is also co-editor and designer of the editorial collective ATLAS, and recently founded the publisher FUMO.
Sena is graduated by FBAUL and received his MFA degree at the Dutch Art Institute, with a studies grant by Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. He participated in the artist residencies Le Pavillon – Palais de Tokyo, Fondazione Antonio Ratti, Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, CCA Andraxt, Blank100 and Guardiões do Mira. In 2021, Sena received the Premio Apertura Comunidad de Madrid, was selected for Berlin Art Prize in 2015 and for Prémio Novos Artistas EDP in 2009.
