Estación total [Total season] offers a journey through the monumental works created by painter Secundino Hernández (Madrid, 1975) over the past decade. Taking inspiration from Juan Ramón Jiménez’s La estación total, the exhibition features a range of works that reflect diverse approaches to the pictorial phenomenon, from his “subtractions with a mechanical process” to his “stitchings”.
The conceptual starting point is his polyptych Four seasons. Between summer and fall (2017), which is being shown in Spain for the first time and serves as the foundation for this exhibition. Hernández delves into the historical roots of abstraction, with a process akin to that of an archaeologist—bringing underlying layers to the surface through physical methods and cutting into the canvases that form the base of his works.
The exhibition also emphasizes the dialogue between destruction and reconstruction, where the artist redefines the canvas not only as a surface for painting but as an active participant in the creative process. This approach transforms the pictorial gesture into a performative act, allowing viewers to witness both the fragility and the resilience inherent in the medium.
