Palau de Casavells is pleased to present Piano del colore, an exhibition conceived by the italian artist Mirco Marchelli specifically for the space, on view from August 1st until August 30th.

Recognized for a practice that combines painting, assemblage, and sculpture, Mirco Marchelli has developed over the past decades a deeply personal visual language. Closely aligned with the sensibility of Italian Arte povera, he transforms everyday materials and objects into poetic compositions charged with memory and evocation.

In his studio, conceived as a laboratory of experimentation, each piece is approached as a musical composition, built on a delicate balance between rigor and spontaneity.

Marchelli understands both art and life as processes that require time, observation, and maturation; a slow and attentive gaze that runs through his entire career and has shaped a coherent, singular body of work faithful to his own creative universe.

After a period in which his artistic practice had shifted toward more neutral and restrained tones, Mirco Marchelli returns in this exhibition to the expressive power of color. Piano del colore arises from a seemingly simple gesture: looking at colour anew with the curiosity and freedom of childhood play.

The title of the exhibition revolves around the polysemy of the Italian word piano, which can mean both “plan” or “map” and the musical instrument itself. This dual reading structures the meaning of each work. On one hand, they form a kind of “color plan,” a personal chromatic cartography reminiscent of urban planning regulations that define the colors of building façades in a given territory. On the other hand, color becomes a visual score, an harmonic sequence of shapes and tones that interact like musical notes.

As the artist himself writes: “E’ in successione armonica, atta a trattar di giuoco, che si avvolge all’improvviso al suono, il colore.” Color thus unfolds as a harmonic sequence oscillating between play and music, between spontaneity and conscious construction.

The paintings presented in Piano del colore are organized as an exercise in controlled freedom, where color is released from any descriptive function to become the absolute protagonist, capable of evoking memories, sensations, and even emotional states.

The musical dimension that runs through the exhibition is also present in a video projection accompanying the paintings, in which a pianist performs a composition by Mirco Marchelli for piano toy. The choice of this instrument is not incidental: its crystalline sound and association with childhood reinforce the playful spirit that permeates the entire exhibition. The piano thus becomes the sonic voice of a visual universe built from forms, harmonies, and emotions.

Between painting and music, between rule and play, Piano del colore invites us to rediscover color as a sensory experience. A color that, like a melody, resonates beyond gaze and lingers in memory.
