Aura is pleased to announce the opening of Cecília Costa's solo exhibition Fumo os fins, which will take place on Saturday, April 26. The Portuguese artist, who has already shown her work at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (Lisbon) and the Sydney Biennale, arrives in Brazil for her first solo show in the country, with several new works.
Accompanied by a text signed by curator Cristiana Tejo, the show presents the public with research that investigates concepts of space, objects and transmutations - using what remains as an impetus for another form, another body, another trace.
"The endings, ah, those I smoke," Cecília comments on the title of the show, citing "smoke" as a symbolic gesture - an alchemy for processes of transformation. In her body of work, what could be understood as an end - the fragmentation or burning of an object - becomes the starting point for something new. The artist reconfigures what once was, using what remains as an impetus for another form, another body, another trace. The word "smoke" here is also analogous to charcoal - a material present in many of her drawings and which reflects part of the concept addressed in her own training: it is waste and, at the same time, a creative tool.
