The exhibition Drift presents Arianna Matta’s most recent body of work.
Her exhibition will take place concurrently with Antonio Matallana’s La contemplazione del reale.
In Drift, spaces dedicated to sport and leisure are transformed into suspended landscapes, where nature and artifice seem to coexist in a precarious balance. Deserted tennis courts, water surfaces and nocturnal visions become silent places, where time seems to have stood still and nature slowly begins to reclaim the space. Through layers and dissolves, the paintings convey ambiguous atmospheres, suspended between memory and imagination, presence and absence.
Vibrant brushstrokes overlap to create depth, abstract fields of colour suggest vegetal forms, thick and thin applications of paint engage in harmonious dialogue within the same context, as do figuration and abstraction.
Arianna Matta’s artistic practice generally follows two distinct paths: on the one hand, a social reflection on the impact of human activity on nature; on the other, the urgency of addressing more intimate and personal concerns, from which emerges a cathartic vision of nature itself.
Water is a recurring presence, traditionally regarded as the quintessential symbol of purification and rebirth, as well as of the feminine, evoking the primordial source of life.
All the works are created by painting on large canvases whose dimensions are not predetermined, allowing the nature of the pictorial material to remain free from any established form.
This expressive freedom is evident in Arianna Matta’s work, which is unbound by any dogma or academic constraint.
Her practice is a pictorial challenge that takes shape through gesture, the expression of material and colour, with the aim of evoking forms and sensations. Formal aspects become particularly significant in the large-scale works, represented in the exhibition by two especially compelling canvases, Black mirror and After the game, which embody the essence of Drift more fully than any others.
