Meyer Riegger is delighted to present Keine paare, keine gruppen, an exhibition by Horst Antes (b. 1936) in our Karlsruhe gallery. Alongside the show at Meyer Riegger, the exhibition Klasse Antes: 1965–1973 / 1984–2000is taking place at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe, with former students paying tribute to the artist and professors birthday.

Drawn from a broader series of approximately 40 works, the presentation features 20 black and white houses, all created in the same year. Each was made according to the same set of self-imposed rules that followed an almost ascetic strictness: one house, rendered in black with a white roof, its gable always on the right, and painted on a support of white-primed plywood.

Only the format is left open, ranging from 45 × 30 cm to 145 × 160 cm. Within this strictness, everything happens. The white roof is the colour of the ground itself: the house is bordered only by its own silhouette. And because every gable points the same way, the 18 houses line up like figures – still standing, facing each other, looking towards the future.
