LewAllen Galleries is pleased to present In a silent way, a solo exhibition including new paintings by Canadian artist Ron Kingswood. On view from November 13, 2026, through January 9, 2027, the exhibition showcases Kingswood’s distinctive synthesis of elevated wildlife zoological knowledge, modernist reductionism to elevate negative space backgrounds, and contemplative nature painting to emphasize environmental awareness.
Rooted in a background in bird ecology and ornithology from the University of Western Ontario, Kingswood unlearns a successful career grounded in traditional wildlife art tropes in favor of a Zen-like minimalism. His large-scale oil on canvas works now eschew literal, specimen-centered depictive habits, favoring asymmetrical compositions, expansive fields of color, and gestural brushwork that evoke the subtle, fleeting energy of the natural world.
Kingswood’s midcareer shift toward an uniquely personal dialogue with modernism—drawing structural inspiration from Paul Klee, Piet Mondrian, Franz Kline, and traditional East Asian ink traditions— recasts the relationship between figure and ground. Fauna and flora emerge within vast, atmosphere-rich spaces: a hawk perched on a pine limb stretching across open space, tundra swans floating like musical notes across a gray sky, or birds drifting softly through winter haze. Rather than treating wildlife as central static subjects, Kingswood renders them in precise relation to their surrounding environments, capturing what theoretical biologist Jakob von Uexküll termed the Umwelt—the distinct sensory world inhabited by each living species.
Through these delicate spatial relations and partial disclosures of habitat, In A Silent Way establishes a deeply meditative space for viewers. The paintings quietly address contemporary questions of ecological change and human encroachment, reflecting what anthropologist Anna Tsing calls an “art of noticing”. As Kingswood succinctly notes of his approach to nature: “One can paint it truthfully without replicating it.”
