The Norval Student Art Prize (NSAP), is an annual initiative that celebrates and supports young creative voices across South Africa. As a leading museum of African and South African art, Norval Foundation is committed to making art accessible while nurturing the next generation of artists.

The NSAP invites learners to share their thoughts, hopes and dreams for the future of South Africa through visual storytelling. The 2026 theme, Dream, is inspired by Tanda rima, a powerful body of work by acclaimed artist Portia Zvavahera. Learners were encouraged to respond through imagination, memory and possibility.

The competition is open to learners from Grades 1 to 12 and is divided into four categories: Foundation Phase (Grades 1–3), Intermediate Phase (Grades 4–6), Senior Phase (Grades 7–9), and FET Phase (Grades 10–12). A panel of judges reviewed all submissions using a point-based system, looking at how well each work responds to the theme, its originality, emotional impact, conceptual thinking and use of materials and technique.

This exhibition gives young artists the chance to share their work in a professional gallery space and be part of a wider conversation about South Africa’s creative future.
