Norval Foundation, in collaboration with Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel, Cape Town, presents Interior weather, an exhibition that brings together works by leading contemporary and modern African artists in a dialogue between art, architecture, and emotion.

Installed throughout Mount Nelson’s lounges, corridors, salons, and patios, the exhibition explores how colour, texture, and material shape atmosphere, memory and feeling. Unfolding through the hotel’s historic interiors, Interior Weather invites visitors to experience art as a sequence of shifting moods and visual temperatures, where moments of brightness give way to reflection, and energy softens into stillness.

Spanning six decades of artistic practice, the exhibition features works by Jan-Henri Booyens, Virginia Chihota, Kate Gottgens, Georgina Gratrix, Nicholas Hlobo, Dada Khanyisa, Eddy Kamuanga Illunga, Wole Lagunju, DuduBloom More, Cassi Namoda, Ephraim Ngatane, Jody Paulsen, Aviwe Plaatjie, and Themba Siwela. Together, these artists explore the expressive potential of material, surface, and gesture, creating works that speak to both personal and collective experiences.

At the heart of the exhibition is the idea of the “interior” as more than a physical space. Through painting, textile, sculpture, and mixed-media works, Interior weather considers how colour can become temperature, texture can become presence, and artistic gesture can communicate inner emotional worlds. Historic works by Ephraim Ngatane are presented alongside contemporary voices, creating a conversation across generations and offering insight into the evolving landscape of African artistic practice.

Presented within one of Cape Town’s most iconic cultural landmarks, Interior weather extends Norval Foundation’s commitment to championing modern and contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora, while fostering new ways of engaging with art beyond the traditional museum setting.
