Alzueta Gallery is delighted to present An imaginary atlas, Emeca’s first solo exhibition at Palau de Casavells, our countryside gallery in the Empordà. The opening party will take place on Saturday, 31
October 2026, from 6 pm, and the exhibition will be on view until 29 November 2026. An imaginary atlas emerges from those places that, over time, continue to form part of our memory.
Environments that remain present within us, not so much because of their specific appearance but because of what they made us feel. When remembered, they lose their coordinates and become subjective representations, constructed through light, colour, and experience.
Emeca’s new series stems from this relationship between landscape and memory and explores how an environment can be transformed into an inner experience: a particular atmosphere, an impression of depth, or a relationship between forms and volumes. Landscape is the starting point, but it is painting that ultimately constructs the space.
Colour plays a key role in this process. Contrasts and overlapping elements generate relationships that constantly alter the way we look at the works. Light acts upon the surface and transforms the sense of spaciousness, while the forms, reduced to their essential elements, maintain a tension between balance and freedom.
As the artist suggests: «The titles form part of this atlas. They name forests, coasts, paths, and horizons, but they also suggest something that is hidden, remains suspended, or returns like an echo. Hidden coast, Suspended horizon, or Echoes of the forest evoke familiar places permeated by a strange sensation, as sometimes happens with memories: we know we were there, even though we can no longer fully separate what we experienced from what we imagined. This coexistence extends the connection with the magical realism that runs through the series.»
An imaginary atlas thus proposes a geography without precise coordinates, where each work evokes a place we feel we recognise, even though we cannot locate it exactly.
