Proof is Gallery 44’s annual group exhibition of work by emerging Canadian artists. Works exhibited in Proof reflect a range of current concerns and practices in contemporary photography and lens-based media. For many artists, Proof is often one of the first exhibitions in a professional context for an emerging artist. Past exhibitions have featured work by Kotama Bouabane, Leila Fatemi, Isabelle Hayeur, Anique Jordan, Lotus Kang, Germaine Koh, Luther Konadu, Meryl McMaster, Karice Mitchell, Elise Rasmussen, Michaëlle Sergile and Althea Thauberger.
The exhibition provides a platform for new voices working across photography and lens-based practices, highlighting the diversity of approaches that characterise contemporary image-making in Canada today. Bringing together artists at an early stage of their careers, Proof offers insight into evolving artistic languages while fostering dialogue around the social, cultural and material questions that shape current practice. Through a broad range of perspectives, the exhibition reflects the vitality and experimentation that define emerging contemporary art.
As an ongoing commitment to supporting the next generation of artists, Proof has established itself as an important point of entry into the professional art world. By presenting new work within the context of Gallery 44’s long-standing programme, the exhibition creates opportunities for visibility, exchange and critical engagement, while continuing to introduce audiences to artists whose practices will shape the future of contemporary photography and lens-based media.
