Taiwan is a country in Asia, known for its top-tier semiconductor manufacturing, especially with a 50% market share via TSMC. They are also known for a high-ranking healthcare system and vibrant, high-quality night markets. The country has a very rich culture and history. The history is deep and ancient, which connects it with China. Earlier, Taiwan was ruled by the Chinese government, but following the civil war, this province fell in 1949, when mainland China became the People’s Republic of China, while on the other side, Taiwan remained the Republic of China. This country has a very interesting situation where a few countries consider it an independent region. But the twist is that some countries believe it to be part of China.
Yes, the economic superpower has had a claim on this region for a long time as its lost province. Over the years, China has repeated its stance on Taiwan. On the other side, it is clear that Taiwan needs someone to back it against the giant beside it, so America fills this empty sphere. Despite a humiliating fallback, America still returned to Taiwan. These conditions have grown over the years, where China has a single-party system, while Taiwan has a democratic system. But all of a sudden, a breeze of twists came below, where in previous days, when the US was busy with Iran, the Taiwanese opposition KMT leader Cheng Li-wun visited China and met Chinese President Xi Jinping. This act drew criticism from her own country fellows, but it also raised a few questions.
Is Taiwan accepting its fate as a Chinese province?
Taiwan is a country blended with ideology, where many people want it to be merged into a Chinese province. But the young minds do not accept that, and there is a huge number of these people who prefer a Taiwanese identity. KMT is also filled with such people. That has created a massive division in the party. The biggest challenge for Cheng is making the party united again, where pro- and anti-China groups will be together. But this recent meeting between the opposition leader and the Chinese president somehow triggered things within the party. Right now, KMT and Cheng have close ties with Beijing, but internal polarisation is affecting them. If Cheng somehow makes the KMT united again before the 2028 election, without any doubt, it will be certain that she is going to win Taiwan’s elections. China has a heavy influence on Taiwan’s elections, where it is already accused of using all state machinery. Somewhere, the meeting is the threshold of Taiwan getting closer to China.
What made Taiwan step toward its identical enemy?
Cheng Li-wun made a statement that the whole course of this travel was a step forward toward regional peace. Taiwan was facing extreme conditions as an island claimed by China. Over the years, it has been a flashpoint between the US and China. This has put high geopolitical pressure on the region. On top of that, they were facing domestic political issues. A tug of war in Taiwan, where on one side there are pro-China supporters and on the other side anti-China supporters. Following so many issues, Taiwan had economic instability. More than 70% of the population does not want any kind of armed standoff with China. That would not only hurt them but also hurt foreign investment or even make it vanish from the country. This move is somewhat of a blow to the mind for Taiwan, trying to find a suitable way forward.
Right on top, Taiwan, or even the whole world, understood what was seen as a sudden change. It was a potential reality check after what the US and Israel's war against Iran showed. This uncovered that to survive any geopolitical face-off or any possible attempt on Taiwan would be very hard. They need someone to make sure the land of Taiwan remains peaceful; they can go to Russia or China. Europe is not in good shape to defend Taiwan.
What will be Taiwan’s future if Cheng Li-wun becomes president?
KMT opposition leader Cheng Li-wun is inclined toward China; that was never hidden information. That is a reason why Taiwan’s establishment does not want her to win. Unfortunately, she got success with 50% of the votes and was appointed as the opposition leader. Now the concern is about her becoming the president of Taiwan. But things are not that simple, as she is believed to be a pro-China leader, while they are only from 5% to 30% of the country. While at her own party, young workers are against a China-favoured system. There are not many chances for her to win the election.
If Cheng passes all these hurdles and somehow manages to survive, it is pretty clear she can be the next president. The direction will be clear: try to join China, or go for any available option. But right now, the major issue is Cheng’s pro-China stance, which will harm her political path to Taiwan’s presidential office.
