What the long-term cognitive and emotional consequences are, we do not yet fully know. We do know that when a technology performs a task for us, we gradually lose fluency in that task ourselves. What happens when AI writes our emails, generates our art, composes our music, diagnoses our patients, screens job applicants, or drafts legal briefs? At first, the promise of smoother operations and greater efficiency is appealing to anyone at any level. But what happens when the satisfaction of retrieving a nearly perfect result replaces the work of learning and solving a challenge? It depends on whether you are directly impacted or not. Either way, we are all affected as efficiency increases; costs of services and goods (should) decrease. And human labor becomes less necessary across many sectors, from hiring systems and administrative roles to manufacturing, production, and medical diagnostics.

The economic argument is straightforward. If a machine performs faster, safer, cheaper, and at scale, institutions will adopt it. The deeper question is existential. What happens to meaning when contribution is no longer required? Work has never been only about income. It structures time, identity, and purpose. If large portions of cognitive labor are automated, humanity faces a paradox: material abundance alongside potential psychological emptiness. The optimistic scenario is clear. AI could help solve poverty, disease, global warming, and resource distribution. Productivity increases. Humans are freed from repetitive labor and can pursue education, creativity, and community. A higher standard of living could become universal.

The darker scenario is also plausible. Wealth and control are concentrated in the hands of those who own the systems, above the influence of democracy or human rights. The majority become passive consumers, entertained, distracted, and algorithmically pacified. Human creativity dissolves. Cultural production is optimized by machines for engagement, programmed to maximize profit. We drift toward a society of manipulated spectators rather than active participants. And unlike before, power today is computational.

When behavior can be predicted and subtly influenced, control no longer requires visible force. It relies on normalization. The most powerful systems are those that feel natural. Once something is repeated enough, whether it's in advertising, in rhetoric, or in media, it becomes accepted. Gradually, not suddenly. Public opinion has always been shaped through repetition. In times of war, propaganda often dehumanizes opponents through language until cruelty becomes permissible. No individual, asked in isolation, would endorse such labels or condone crimes against humanity. Yet within a repeated narrative, moral boundaries shift. During mass propaganda, and especially in wartime, there are no rules. We, the people, obey laws designed to keep us sane and in our place. These laws are not intended for everyone.

Normalization, power, and the future of meaning

What begins as a harmless imitation rarely stays harmless at scale. We copy each other, children copying games in the streets, adults copying similar material assets to signal status or compete. On social platforms, trends spread the same way. At first, nothing seems dangerous. But imitation is a powerful social force. When behavior becomes normalized through repetition, resistance weakens. So when people claim to understand contemporary change, whether it is the rise of artificial intelligence, its impact on how we see each other, or its effect across industries, they may understand it intellectually, but not fully.

Real understanding comes from experiencing these shifts firsthand, alongside others who share the same context, whether it be industrial transformation, societal upheaval, or even war. The modern age lacks empathy. Trivial things begin to matter more than essential ones. Visibility outweighs substance. We have gone from simply existing on this planet to becoming a species capable of destroying it, while obsessing over curated identities and acceptable opinions. What to wear, what to think, which ideology signals virtue, and which character traits signal success. These values are embedded deeply in our psyche, and they shape what we believe is important.

Now I ask something more unsettling. If you read something that moves you deeply, does it matter whether it came from a human being expressing lived experience or from a machine that has predicted exactly what will stimulate you by pulling from billions of data points? A system that might understand your preferences better than you understand yourself. The real question is whether people question the source or simply consume it without thought. I am convinced that most will not question it. Once something becomes normalized, the herd accepts it. I would even argue that we are already there. Your data becomes the instrument of your own influence. The most manipulated person may be the one who believes they are immune. People say, “No, this will not happen.” But transformation does not arrive with an announcement. It appears in silence, before you see yourself chained to a larger context.

The question of meaning remains. If technology replaces not just labor but creativity, if it writes, designs, composes, analyzes, and decides, then what do we offer as individuals, as a civilization? If AI and robotics remove the need for manufacturing and production workers and a majority of white-collar jobs, perhaps society could evolve toward shared prosperity. Or it could drift toward meaninglessness, where comfort replaces contribution and stimulation replaces purpose. Or it could give rise to a utopian philosophy, in which each individual is free to fulfill their essence through leisure and genuine fulfillment.

Today, the direction of AI is not neutral. It is driven by capital, competition, and scale. The systems being built are infrastructures designed to dominate markets, military operations, information, and human behavior itself. Money accelerates development, which concentrates power. Concentration of power begins to define the rules under which everyone else operates. That is where belief quietly enters, not as religion in the traditional sense, but as an unquestioned framework of reality. The doors are open. The ceremony has already begun. We step into a fabricated layer of reality, where new technological reference points define what is true. Because once the system of AI has colonized our own imagination, the spark for meaning may dim for good.
