My daughter is an exceptionally bright and curious little girl. Recently, she learnt about the mesmerising Northern Lights at her nursery, and since then, our lives have been infused with wonder and excitement surrounding this natural phenomenon. She has eagerly watched nearly every documentary available, her eyes wide with amazement, and she has bombarded me with a flurry of questions about this enchanting spectacle. Determined to make her dreams come true, I decided that witnessing the Northern Lights firsthand would be the ultimate gift. So, with a sense of adventure in our hearts, I purchased our tickets, and soon we will embark on a magical journey to Iceland in December, where we will chase the vibrant colours dancing across the winter sky.
Just before Christmas, we embarked on a memorable journey, accompanied by my spirited daughter and my partner, as well as my aunt and her adventurous partner. Together, we set out to create lasting memories during this festive season, filled with laughter and shared experiences.
Our adventure commenced on the brisk morning of December 22nd. We touched down at precisely 11:47 AM, just as the sun began to stretch its golden rays across the horizon. At this time of year, daylight graces us with only about four fleeting hours, casting an enchanting yet fleeting glow over the landscape.
Upon arrival, we were immediately struck by the reality that the weather fell short of our expectations. The anticipated blanket of snow was absent; instead, heavy grey clouds veiled the sky, while a steady drizzle coated the earth. Still, buoyed by the spirit of adventure, we held onto our optimism, believing that the gloomy clouds would eventually part to reveal the beauty we had hoped to experience.
The moment we picked up our rental car, excitement surged through us as we set our sights on the breathtaking Blue Lagoon, just nine miles from the airport. As we drove closer, an unexpected but faint aroma reminiscent of rotten eggs wafted through the air, a hint of the geothermal wonders awaiting us. Yet, as we rounded the final bend and caught our first glimpse of the lagoon, all thoughts of discomfort faded away, replaced by sheer awe. The landscape unfolded like a surreal painting, with dark volcanic soil forming a striking contrast against the striking azure waters. It felt as though we had stepped onto another planet, the otherworldly terrain enveloping us in a captivating moon-like atmosphere that left us utterly mesmerised.
After taking a refreshing shower and slipping into our swimsuits, we finally felt ready to revel in the incredible perks of the Blue Lagoon's enchanting waters. The sheer beauty of the landscape surrounding us, with its surreal turquoise hues and steam rising gently from the geothermal springs, left us utterly captivated. We could hardly contain our excitement and couldn’t wait to share this breathtaking experience with our families and friends back home.
With eager anticipation, we made our way to the charming little mud bar nestled at the edge of the lagoon. The warm, mineral-rich mud beckoned us, and we couldn't resist trying out the famous silica mask that promised glowing skin. As we laughed and applied the mud to our faces, I opted to forgo the drinks offered at the bar, knowing that I was the designated driver for the day. Instead, I watched my family sip their drinks, their laughter harmonising with the soothing sounds of water splashing around us. The atmosphere was filled with joy and relaxation, making us feel like we had truly entered a paradise.
On our second day of this short visit to Iceland, we still hadn’t had the luck to witness the enchanting Northern Lights, which eluded us once again due to overcast skies and unpredictable weather conditions. Undeterred, we set off for The Great Geysir, an iconic geothermal area known for its stunning landscape and dramatic thermal activity. As we walked through the site, we marvelled at the vibrant hues of the surrounding moss and the craggy rocks.
The air was filled with the distinct scent of sulphur, a reminder of the volcanic activity just beneath the surface. As we reached the geyser, its impressive steam plumes erupted rhythmically, shooting boiling hot water high into the air, creating a mesmerising spectacle. We stood in awe, taking in the raw power of nature, feeling the warmth of the steam on our faces as we captured the moment with our cameras, savouring the breathtaking beauty of the Icelandic landscape.
On the third day of our trip, we eagerly set out to explore the vibrant city of Reykjavik. Our first stop was the stunning cathedral, a breathtaking architectural marvel, where we were lucky enough to witness their annual Christmas carol event. The enchanting melodies filled the air, creating a truly magical atmosphere that left us spellbound.
After soaking in the music, we meandered through the charming streets of the town, where my little one excitedly laced up their skates to try ice skating for the very first time. Laughter and joy filled the crisp air as they glided across the rink, surrounded by twinkling lights and the festive spirit.
As we continued our exploration, we stumbled upon cosy eateries offering an array of delicious local dishes. Our day concluded with a delightful stroll through artisan shops, where we picked up unique souvenirs that would forever remind us of our beautiful adventure in Reykjavik.
Despite the challenging weather conditions and the bittersweet disappointment of not witnessing the Northern Lights, our short trip became a delightful adventure filled with cherished moments alongside my family. Each evening, we gathered around, sharing laughter and heartfelt conversations while sampling an array of local craft beers, each with its unique flavour profile. The rich, hoppy aromas and hints of caramel or citrus added a special touch to our evenings. This experience has only fuelled our determination to continue our quest to behold the magical auroras, or as my little girl affectionately refers to them, the “Orden Light”. It's a term that captures her wonder and excitement, and I look forward to the day we finally see those mesmerising colours dance across the night sky together.
