Naledi Ramphele

Naledi Ramphele is a South African visual artist and writer who could be summarised as "an absolute nerd". His biggest fascinations are all animated or in some kind of alternate reality, and he treats this interest, largely in Japanese comics and animation, like an integral part of his life. Inspired at an early age by mediums like animation, video games, and literature, much of his artistic offerings show clear evidence of this inspiration in each of his original character designs and illustrations.

From analysing the thematic significance of character names, to enjoying the satisfying flow of a well-drawn manga, there is a feeling of belonging that Naledi has found in this hyper-specific niche. When the Animax channel was integrated into DSTV’s bouquet of viewing options in September 2007, an interest that was originally fostered by the SABC’s frequent airing of popular anime titles like Dragon Ball, Beyblade, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Hamtaro, and various acclaimed works of animation, became a young Naledi’s primary passion. While the channel was short-lived, it left a huge impression on Naledi, who continues to enjoy anime to this day.

He currently holds a BSocSci, majoring in Politics and Sociology obtained from the University of Cape Town. While heavily enamoured with the world of anime and committed to becoming a mangaka in his own right, over the course of his life, Naledi has become aware of his penchant for acquiring language and writing, which he has honed over the course of his childhood into his young adulthood, when he came into his first job as a writer for the anime news website, Honey's Anime in 2016 at the age of 18. Six years and hundreds of articles later, Naledi landed another job as an anime features and news writer, this time for Valnet's popular culture news digital publication, GameRant, where he has enjoyed increased proximity to the anime world that he loves so dearly, writing news pieces, features, and conducting interviews with all kinds of professionals in the industry, from voice actors to editors of popular manga titles to mangaka themselves.

At GameRant, Naledi has had the honour of interviewing various heavy-hitters in the industry; various voice actors such as Johnny Yong Bosch, Brina Palencia, J Michael Tatum, Aleks Le, Caitlin Glass, and Zeno Robinson, as well as Status Royale author Ru Xu and VIZ Media Senior Editor Mike Montesa, who oversaw various manga including Hiroe Rei’s Black Lagoon and Himekawa Akira’s Legend of Zelda manga.

An industrious writer, Naledi brings a thirst for research and delving deep into his interests, sharing his findings with whoever will listen or read his musings. In his spare time, Naledi likes to watch anime and read manga, with his favourite work being Tite Kubo's BLEACH, a story with a supernatural premise that has served as some of his greatest artistic inspiration. Other activities Naledi likes to do include playing video games, learning new languages, reading up on the occult and watching or talking about football, his favourite club being Arsenal. HIs musical interests include hip-hop, rock, math rock, breakcore, and neo-soul, a variety of sounds that illustrate Naledi's diverse range of interests despite his obvious obsession with Japanese animation.

As an artist, Naledi has made a number of appearances at conventions, with three appearances in the Artist Alley at Comic Con Africa, and one at AVIJOZI 2023, an event that showcases the immense talent in animation and VFX technology that is all around us in the country and the continent at large. As an artist, he goes by the moniker “Antares, The Spectre.”, a “true name” that reflects his immense interest in the supernatural, mythological, and the occult, as well as his childhood interest in astronomy that meets his creativity as a writer. His art has been described as “creepy” with a “sketchy” use of lines that is a unique nexus between Naledi’s love for animation and comics with his unending interest in the occult.
