The Ministry of Culture of the Government of Mexico and the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (INBAL) invite the public to visit the renewed 19th-century art galleries at the National Museum of Art (Munal), featuring a curatorial selection of nearly 60 pieces, including oil paintings, sculptures, and lithographs.
This curatorial approach offers a reinterpretation of key themes that were fundamental to the consolidation of national identity during a period of great transformation and struggles for Mexico’s autonomy. From its artistic stronghold, the Academy of San Carlos exalted representations of the pre-Columbian past, national origins, and foundational myths of the Mexican nation, highlighting the figure of its heroes.
In the newly renovated galleries, visitors can admire works by masters such as Luis Monroy, Cayetano Padilla, José Jara, Leandro Izaguirre, José María Obregón, José Salomé Pina, Manuel Vilar, Gabriel Guerra, and Casimiro Castro, to name a few.
