Looking for a simple way to incorporate wellness into your home. Consider bringing in nature by including house plants. Did you know that houseplants can help to improve your physical health, mood, and well-being? Yes, it is true! They are an easy and cost-effective way to bring the beauty of nature into your home.
If you are a renter or homeowner, there are many ways that houseplants can help to improve your overall well-being. And there are many different types of plants you can choose from—the snake plant, pothos, and aloe vera plant are easy houseplants to take care of and don’t require a lot of tender loving care. All these plants improve your well-being by adding nature and greenery to your home environment. Let’s take a closer look at the different types of houseplants, the health benefits of plants and easy ways to incorporate them into your home.
Easy houseplants to maintain
Snake plants improve air quality and are low maintenance. Health benefits of this plant include removing some indoor air pollutants and producing oxygen through photosynthesis. Also, taking care of plants helps to decrease stress levels and improve mood.
Pothos are probably one of the easiest plants to grow and if you are an individual who doesn’t have a green thumb and may forget to water your plant every now and then, do not worry; pothos are very forgiving. This plant will grow luscious green vines to create a calm home environment.
Aloe Vera plant has so many health benefits. Aloe vera helps with sunburns, minor skin irritation, dry skin, and small scrapes. Generally, aloe vera helps and aids the skin with the natural healing process.
Herb garden
Create an herb garden in your kitchen. No matter if you have a tiny kitchen in your city apartment or a large kitchen with spacious countertop space, either will work well to create your own herb garden. Herb gardens are ideal if you don’t have a balcony and would like the benefits of growing something that is edible. Some herbs to consider growing:
Mint – Helps to reduce bloating and helpful to relieve stomach cramps.
Lemon Balm – Can promote relaxation, reduce anxiety, and may improve sleep.
Lavender – In addition to lemon balm, lavender also helps with relaxation and can assist with headaches.
Easy ways to create a kitchen herb garden
Even without counter space, there are many ways to create your own herb garden. Create a floating herb garden with a tension rod, or consider hanging potted herbs from a curtain rod. Use your fridge as a space to create your garden by attaching a magnet to small terra cotta pot, tin pot, or place herbs in water tubes and voila you have just created your very own herb garden. With this set up it gives you flexibility to easily move pots around where the herbs would benefit from direct or indirect sunlight. Benefits to creating a herb garden include:
Easy access to ingredients to make natural teas
Create amazing dishes by using fresh herbs to add to your meals.

Create a balcony garden
If you have the pleasure of having a balcony then certainly consider creating a garden on your balcony with potted flowers, herbs and aromatherapy plants. Nurturing a balcony garden has similar health benefits to spending time at a public garden space - both help to reduce irritability and increase positive feelings and calmness.
Like indoor plants there are a variety of plants that benefit from direct or indirect sunlight when outdoors and it would be helpful to do a bit of research to find out which plants would grow best on your balcony. For example, if you have a south- or southwest-facing balcony that receives 5+ hours of direct sunlight, you have hit the jackpot with the nourishment of the sun to grow your tomatoes, sunflowers, cucumbers, and eggplants—all these plants thrive and love to bask in the sun.
Plant and enjoy
I’m probably somewhat biased writing this article, as I love to garden and I always have. There is something about planting seeds and seeing them blossom, tilling the soil, or uprooting weeds that honestly gives me pure joy! I still have fond memories as a child working in the vegetable garden with my father.
I was fascinated as a child by the process of simply placing a seed in the ground and then watering it; this seed would produce a bounty of vegetables. It was pure magic to me. I’m wishing you all the best as you bring nature and nourishment into your home with plants and herbs—creating wellness for your mind, body, and home. Happy gardening!
