Rouge Belge explores the Belgian red marble as a material with a long social, artisanal & aesthetic history - Table rouge Belge, the project’s 1st manifestation, features a six-metre tabletop composed of approximately twenty reclaimed marble slabs collected from Belgian homes. Each fragment which once served a domestic function — as a fireplace, tabletop, cabinet surface or wall cladding — carries traces of lived interiors.
The varied colours & patterns reflect both the geological layers of the stone & its (hi)story references to design & art history. The table’s modular structure allows it to expand or contract, suggesting a potentially endless collection of fragments and narratives. Its legs, assembled from Belgian bluestone, porphier (kasseien) and architectural elements, create a dialogue between home & street - private & public / collective.
Through acts of collecting, segmenting and reassembling, Table rouge Belge reflects on the life cycle of stone and functions as both ‘nature morte’ and a social table — a place for gathering and shared experience.
