Who hasn’t, at least once in their life, uttered the somewhat outdated saying, “Best wishes—and may you have sons”? At Teatro Golden, from February 19 to March 8, the talented I Centouno (Luca Latino, Flavio Moscatelli, Ezio Passacantilli), together with Francesca Anna Bellucci and Lara Balbo, bring the play Sons to the stage. In the past, having a male child offered reassurance and stability—but times have definitely changed.

In this hilarious comedy, Luca and Flavio, sons of divorced parents, must confront the emotional legacy of a nonconformist mother who is perhaps, at times, elusive. She is late for the party the two have decided to throw for her seventieth birthday. The terrace has been decorated, the table—laboriously carried up from the lower floors—is now set; and, unexpectedly, Ezio, Luca and Flavio’s cousin, has already arrived. He has always considered their mother as a second mother to him.

As the clock ticks on, the three pass the time with drinks and begin talking about their lives, which turn out to be far less calm than they might appear. After all, an apartment building is, by definition, a place of unexpected—and often unwanted—encounters. Before they know it, the trio find themselves entangled in the clearly turbulent lives of two chance visitors to the terrace.

Amid surprising revelations, plot twists, and razor-sharp jokes, the protagonists are called to face the reality of three lives that are as entrenched as they are unstable. Will they rise to their desire for change, or will they topple the age-old belief that sons are a blessing? The only way to find out is not to miss the next show by “I Centouno.”
