Born and raised in the region of Alsace (France), Valentin Bosshard holds a double Master’s degree in political sciences and international relations from Sciences Po Strasbourg and currently works in the field of public affairs. Passionate about geopolitical and societal issues, Valentin strives to understand and dissect the world around him.
Growing up in a binational family, Valentin quickly grew a fierce interest in foreign languages and cultures. After mastering English, Valentin set to learn German, Spanish, and Japanese – a task which he continues to this day. Having lived in several countries and made friends from all over the world, he is always thrilled to make new acquaintances.
After graduating in 2023, Valentin worked in the buzzing financial capital of Germany, Frankfurt am-Main, for 6 months. There, he gained a broad understanding of the financial world and its ramifications in our modern society. Currently, he works as a Media Analyst in Dublin, unearthing patterns from media trends for a wide array of clients. His position allows him to analyze policies for various sectors, ranging from the digital world to sustainability and climate issues.
His dissertation, entitled ‘’The Prospects of German and Japanese Powers, Between Civilisation and Affirmation on the International Scene’’, compares the evolution of the German and Japanese foreign policies since the 1990s. Delving into the similarities and differences between these two countries, the thesis argues that Japan and Germany follow a similar path in international relations, characterized by an incremental involvement in global diplomacy and a revision of constitutional pacifism. The redaction of this lengthy document sparked a genuine interest in the art of writing, which he exercises whenever he has a chance.
Much of Valentin’s research focuses on Europe and Asia, their intertwinement, respective histories, and potential trajectories. Victim of ‘’hallyu’’, avid reader of manga, and lover of Thai cuisine, Valentin would like to better understand the region’s history, beyond cultural stereotypes and widespread clichés. Consequently, he has read his fair share of books, essays, and dissertations detailing Asia’s vibrant history.
Having grown up in the heart of Europe, Valentin is also unapologetically pro-European. His roots in a region that sits at the crossroads of multiple European identities provide him with a unique perspective on the continent’s diverse cultures, traditions, and histories.
Valentin also bears an interest in climate change, technology policy issues, and diversity and inclusion – some themes that he believes to be of paramount importance in our ever-changing society. In the wake of growing extremism, he firmly believes that the power of the pen is, indeed, mighty, and should be exercised with great caution.
