Every man takes the limits of his own field of vision for the limits of the world, but true insight begins when we dare to step beyond our comfortable truths and see the world through another's eyes.
(Arthur Schopenhauer)
Born and raised in a small town in the province of Treviso, Italy, Alberto Carrer is a young researcher driven by an insatiable curiosity and passion for our world. With a master’s degree in European and International Studies from the School of International Studies at Trento University and a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) from the Ca’ Foscari University in Venice, Alberto has cultivated a multidisciplinary approach to global issues. He firmly believes that the best way to understand our world is to embrace different perspectives and realities.
This foundational conviction has guided his academic and professional journey, fueling his dedication to processes of nation-building, development, and regional studies with a strong attention to the complex interplay between local narratives and global trends. His research spans a range of fascinating regions, including ones that challenge the conventional notions of sovereignty and statehood, like the contested areas of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Alberto’s fascination with untold and non-mainstream stories has become a defining feature of his work, drawing him to marginalized narratives and dimensions of global dynamics. By bringing these stories to the forefront, Alberto hopes to expand the collective understanding of the world's interconnected complexities.
The love for knowledge and the necessity to understand and narrate distant worlds led Alberto to live and work in the South Caucasus, particularly in Georgia. During this time he conducted in-depth research on post-Soviet political transitions and socio-economic trends. Besides allowing him to refine its ability to bridge theory and practice, this experience contributed to Alberto’s knowledge of the region by building strong networks with local and international think tanks and scholars. Through this research experience, Alberto contributed to comprehensive reports addressing the region's geopolitical challenges.
Alberto’s time in Georgia also helped him develop a profound understanding of the complex geopolitical landscape of the South Caucasus. His research focused on the region’s evolving relations with Russia, the European Union, and neighboring countries, and he examined how the South Caucasus and Central Asia's position between these global powers impacts its internal development. This experience gave him a firsthand perspective on the socio-political dynamics of transitioning countries, contributing to his broader academic and professional profile. His ability to write comprehensive reports that addressed both the local and international implications of regions’ geopolitical challenges became one of his key strengths.
In addition to his academic work, Alberto has contributed to public discourse on European and geopolitical issues through his articles published on different online platforms dedicated to European Union foreign policy. His writing brings attention to the nuanced political developments in Eastern Europe and the enlargement of the EU, making complex issues accessible to a wider audience. By distilling sophisticated political analysis into engaging articles, Alberto has managed to bridge the gap between scholarly research and public understanding, making his contributions relevant both in academic circles and among general readers.
Fluent in Italian, English, and French, Alberto’s linguistic capabilities have greatly enhanced his ability to engage with diverse cultures and collaborate with international colleagues. His language proficiency has allowed him to access a broad spectrum of academic and policy literature, and it has enabled him to communicate complex ideas to various stakeholders. This skill, combined with his intellectual curiosity, has facilitated his work across multiple regions and cultures, strengthening his role as a researcher with a global perspective.
Looking ahead, Alberto is committed to further exploring the nation-building and development processes and the relationship between these realities and global trends, with a particular focus on regions and states that challenge conventional and taken-for-granted understandings. He aspires to contribute to a world where nuanced, empathetic understanding of complex geopolitical issues informs decision-making processes, ultimately fostering a more interconnected and informed global society.
