Keith looked out his window and saw his cab. He grabbed his briefcase and luggage and went downstairs. As he got into the cab, he thought to himself, “Am I really doing this?” Yes, he was really doing it. Actually, he had no choice; it was a mandatory work conference in Madrid that was scheduled and finalized before the disappearance of his girlfriend, Danielle.

Six weeks earlier, Keith was driving home with Danielle on a stormy night through a wooded area. They were lost and had no reception on their cell phones and minimal lighting on the road. As the night grew longer, they became tired, but Keith kept himself awake and alert. From the corner of his eye, he noticed that Danielle had fallen asleep. He found it amusing how quickly she would fall asleep. She would always easily fall asleep in his arms, and that’s how they would sleep the whole night, wrapped within one another.

On that night, they couldn’t sleep like that, so Keith came up with another idea. There was a blanket not far from his reach, which he could grab quickly while still steering and keeping an eye on the road. He reached over and laid the blanket on top of Danielle. Within a split second, he saw a deer run onto the road. He swerved to avoid it and ended up colliding with an unfinished barrier. The impact was severe, leaving Keith unconscious for about ten minutes. When he woke up, he couldn’t find Danielle. When he got out of the car and got closer to the barrier, he saw that it was a barrier to a cliff, and there was a river at the bottom. With no sight of Danielle and a large hole through the window, he assumed the worst, especially since she was not wearing a seatbelt. He looked down and was hardly able to see anything in the dark. He walked around shouting her name, but there was no response. He desperately searched for her as well as service on his cell phone. He finally found service and was able to call the police.

When the police reached the scene, Keith explained what had happened, and he was brought to the hospital for medical attention for his mild concussion. He was told by the police that a search party would be organized immediately. That search party continued for a few weeks, and Keith showed up every day to help look for Danielle. As the days went on, the search party decreased in size, since most people believed her to be dead.

Keith never gave up, and on the last day of the search party, it was just a party of two (Keith and the initial officer who reported to the scene of the accident). The officer told Keith he would no longer be searching for Danielle. Then, in the most empathetic way, the officer tried to explain to Keith that it would be almost impossible for her to have survived the accident. Keith then responded, “Almost… that’s the key word.” He then walked away from the officer and continued to walk through the woods to look for her.

That Sunday, there was a funeral held for Danielle, which Keith refused to attend, and on Monday, he returned to work. He had taken some time off, and his colleagues were aware of what had happened. In fact, the first one he saw gave him condolences for his loss, but Keith had responded, “Condolences are to be given to people after the death of a loved one. Danielle is not dead; she’s just missing. There’s a difference.” After overhearing that, no one else at work brought up Danielle again to Keith. It was safer to avoid the topic.

Keith sat at the conference, and all he could do was think about how this trip made him miss a few days of searching for Danielle. Every morning before work, he would drive to the area of the accident and walk around looking for her.

After two days at the conference, the employees had a free day until their flight the next morning, so they organized a trip to Ibiza. Although not in the mood to party, Keith had agreed to go with his colleagues. He loved the beach; he even first met Danielle on a beach.

The flight was quick from Madrid, and after they checked into their rooms, they went to the beach. The tranquil beach and warm sun let Keith’s mind rest for a while. He looked over at the sea, which was so calm, and contemplated going for a swim. While staring out into the sea, he saw someone he knew: Danielle!

Keith called out to her, but she was far away and listening to music, so she didn’t hear him. He then got up and ran after her. She was walking into a grotto, and he followed her inside. Trying not to startle her, he called out her name, and she turned around. She was just as happy to see him as he was to see her. They kissed and embraced, and Danielle asked if they could go to his room to speak privately.

While walking back to the hotel, Keith began to think about how strange their encounter was. How did she know he was in Ibiza? Was she so quiet because she was mad at him? Did she blame him for the accident? Why did she not want to be outside at all? They were in Ibiza together, so he at least thought they could go out to dinner together. This was very unlike her personality, which made him wonder even more what had actually happened to her on the night of the accident.

They ordered dinner via room service and had some good laughs together, even though Danielle didn’t want to talk about the accident, and Keith thought maybe it was because of post-traumatic stress. Her behavior was strange, though, doing things she never did before. She was constantly saying how thirsty she was and needed water, and ended up drinking about three bottles. She ate dinner like she hadn’t eaten in a month, even eating most of Keith’s dinner. Then, when they were kissing, he began to undress her, but she apologized to him and said it was too soon. At that point, he realized she may have blamed him for the accident. He laid his head on her bare breast and began to cry and said he was sorry. Then she stroked the short hairs on his head and assured him that she did not blame him but, rather, needed him to do something for her.

Danielle whispered a location to him in his ear and explained that she had been found there, but left her phone behind, and wanted to know if he could go there after he landed and look for her phone. Keith was absolutely perplexed and proceeded to ask her so many questions, like why she traveled out of the country without a phone, or why she couldn’t buy a new phone. She avoided answering and explained that she would be home after him, so he should leave the phone in her mailbox. She made him promise that he would do it, and he did. Then it was getting late, so they fell asleep in each other’s arms like they had always done. Keith felt one of Danielle’s tears fall on him, and this time, he fell asleep instantaneously before she did.

The next morning, Keith woke up for his flight, but Danielle was gone. He looked around for her, but she was nowhere to be found. He couldn’t believe this was happening again. His colleague, Kurt, called him to let him know the cab to the airport had arrived. Keith then explained how he found Danielle there again, but now she was missing again. He told him that he wouldn’t be able to leave until he found her. Kurt was worried about Keith because he seemed delusional since the accident, so Kurt came up with a clever plan. He told Keith he should ask someone at the concierge if they had seen Danielle, which Keith thought was a great idea. Kurt, who was already downstairs, asked the concierge attendant if a woman actually did go to Keith’s room last night and leave that morning. Through a quick check of video footage, the attendant confirmed that no one else besides Keith had entered or left his room. Kurt then explained to the attendant that when his colleague, Keith Lollo, checks out and asks about a woman, he must answer that Danielle Di Angelo left early in the morning and left a message for him that she is fine and will see him again in New Jersey. The attendant had refused to do it initially until he was offered money to do so. Upon hearing this information, Keith decided to go home.

After exiting the airport, Keith immediately got into his car and drove to the location specified by Danielle. It was a far drive, and when he got there, he parked and looked around, but there was no sign of a phone. He saw the abandoned hotel she mentioned, but still no sign of a phone. As he was about to leave, he heard the clicking of a key on a phone screen. He followed the sound and called out if anyone was there, but all he heard was clicking. The sound got louder, so he knew he was closer. He saw a person wrapped in a blanket. He ran over to help, and as he got closer, he saw a finger tapping on the screen of a phone. He moved the blanket, which looked so familiar, down to uncover the person’s face, and it was Danielle, and Keith was speechless!

The tapping on the phone stopped, and so did Danielle’s pulse. Keith held her lifeless body in his arms. He burst into tears as he looked down at her face. Her mouth was half open, and her once beautiful lips were shriveled and dried up as a result of dehydration. The tears ran down his face and into her half-open mouth, and then she coughed. Now, Keith was really shocked. He then remembered that he had water in his bag, so he poured some down her throat, which began to revive her. He called 911 and stayed with her in his arms until help had arrived.

Keith went with Danielle to the hospital and stayed there with her until she was coherent. The doctor explained to Keith that Danielle was severely dehydrated. Danielle explained to the doctor what happened on the night of the accident. She had fallen into the water and had survived, but the current brought her to an unknown place. She had no phone and only the blanket she was wrapped in. She stayed by the river to remain hydrated and ate fish for nourishment, but then one day, a strange man was following her, so she strayed from the river to escape him, but ended up getting lost in the woods and became dehydrated.

Although the doctor’s medical explanation made sense, there were so many other things that happened that had no explanation. Interestingly enough, nobody questioned how Keith found Danielle; they just applauded him for his persistence. Keith never told anyone the real way he found her, not even Danielle, when they finally reunited in the hospital. Perhaps their love was so strong that it surpassed any rational explanation, making the “impossible” possible.
