It is currently the 29th of July, 2025. Liverpool Football Club has made 5 summer signings in the form of Georgi Marmadashavili, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Hugo Ekitike, and Florian Wirtz. By the looks of things, the shopping spree is not done yet. Over the past week, it has been widely reported by multiple sources that Aleksander Isak has informed Newcastle United of his desire to join Liverpool. In response, Liverpool are said to be preparing a £130–150 million bid, and such a fee will smash the record for the most expensive British transfer ever. Additionally, there are also rumours of Liverpool attempting to sign Rodrygo Goes from Real Madrid and Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, and if these two players are bought along with Isak, Liverpool could end up spending nearly £500m.

Between 2016 and 2019, Virgil van Dijk, Mohammed Salah, and Alisson Becker all joined Liverpool and have formed the spine of one of the most successful teams Liverpool has had in its long history. The inclusion of Van Dijk brought some much-needed leadership and resilience to Liverpool’s defense, Alisson radiated a calm and reliable presence in the Liverpool goal, and Salah has been breaking both goal-scoring and creative records since he joined the club. These 3 players have been instrumental in Liverpool winning 2 Premier Leagues and 1 Champions League.

Earlier this summer, with the 2024/25 Premier League season coming to a close and Liverpool being champions, there was more good news for Liverpool supporters as the club announced that Van Dijk and Salah had agreed to sign new contracts that kept them at the club till 2027. With Van Dijk, Salah, and Alisson all staying till 2027, it very much feels like the final chapter for them, and therefore Liverpool seems determined to ensure that these three club legends are able to challenge and win as much as they can before their time at the club is up. It was also reported that in order to get Van Dijk and Salah to extend their contracts, the Liverpool board made promises that investment would take place to make the squad stronger and more competitive, which brings us to the current day.

The likes of Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Hugo Ekitike, and possibly Aleksander Isak are going to make up the next core of Liverpool. Wirtz is a player who has been touted as one of, if not the, best U-23 attacking midfielders in Europe, and his stats at Leverkusen showcase this, as during his time in the Bundesliga, he notched up 35 goals and 47 assists in 147 games. Frimpong is a player who adds pace and dynamism to Liverpool and can play anywhere along the right side, which means he can deputize for Salah, who is only going to get older and will need resting, or at right back, where he will be competing with Connor Bradley.

Ekitike was one of the most sought-after forwards this summer, and it is clear to see why, as his technical ability, along with his physical profile, make him a ‘multi-functional forward’ in the eyes of Arne Slot, and being 23 means that he is at Liverpool for the foreseeable future. Lastly, Isak would end up being the cherry on top of the cake, so to speak, as this is a player who has the potential to be the best striker in the world. Isak’s mentality, along with his clinical scoring and technical ability, ensures that Liverpool has someone who can pick up the goalscoring burden once Salah leaves, and until then, he will share attacking responsibility with the Egyptian. It is clear that it is not just a refreshing of the squad but that Liverpool is preparing for the post-Van Dijk and Salah era now, which is a testament to how well-run the club is.

However, rebuilding a squad while keeping one foot in the present time can be difficult, as many clubs in Europe have been too slow with phasing out legendary players, either by keeping them at the club for too long or replacing them too early. Liverpool is determined to avoid such a fate, and that can be seen from the signings they have made this season, who are not only young but are also flexible. As mentioned before, Frimpong can play right wing or as a right back, Wirtz can play in midfield or as a left winger, Ekitike can play as a striker or on the wing, and Isak can also do the same. The plan from Liverpool is clear: assemble a team where the young elite talent can learn from the older players and then carry the torch once they leave the club.

Transitions in football are never easy, especially when having to move from a core set of players that achieved so much success to a new squad of players that will be expected to achieve the same amount of success, if not more. Liverpool is being ambitious, and by securing their legendary trio for a final push while bringing in elite young talent, the coming season will only be an exciting one for Liverpool fans. Questions remain as to how quickly all these players can acclimatize to Liverpool and the speed at which everything clicks, but one thing is for sure: this summer will define Liverpool for the next decade.
