Wolji gallery presents around a thousand cultural assets that were carefully selected from some 30,000 cultural assets dating from the Unified Silla Period that were discovered in the Donggung (lit. East Palace) and Wolji (Anapji) Pond in Gyeongju. They have been divided based on specific themes to help visitors better understand the culture of Unified Silla and the lifestyle of the royal family.
Wolji Pond is an artificial pond that was created at Donggung Palace in Gyeongju. Although this pond was referred to as ‘Anapji’ from the Joseon period onwards, Silla people always called it Wolji. Judging by the following record from the 14th year of the reign of King Munmu(674) of Silla, “A pond was dugout, flowers and plants were planted, and birds and animals were cultivated at the palace,” It appears that Wolji Pond was built no later than 674.
The Wolji Gallery displays various cultural heritages associated with the luxurious lifestyle of Silla’s royal family and nobility, including a Dragon Face Roof Tile, Gilt-bronze Buddha Plaques (Treasure), and a Gilt-bronze Wick Trimmer (Treasure).
