Tsinghua University Art Museum owns furniture collections covering the period from the Ming Dynasty to modern time, mainly in stools, tables, and shelves. There is also a small amount of cabinet furniture. Among them, more than 50 pieces of famous Ming-style furniture mainly made of yellow pears, red sandalwood and other materials, and seven of them are included in the Rewards of Ming-style Furniture edited by Mr. Wang Shizhao.
These pieces not only reflect the refined aesthetics and craftsmanship of the Ming period, but also offer valuable insight into the social customs and cultural practices of the time. Each item demonstrates a mastery of proportion, structural ingenuity, and subtle decorative techniques that have become hallmarks of traditional Chinese furniture design.
In addition to the Ming-style pieces, the collection features examples from the Qing Dynasty and early modern periods, illustrating the evolution of furniture styles through changing historical contexts. The diversity and richness of the collection make it an important resource for researchers, students, and enthusiasts interested in the history of Chinese material culture.
