Eb&Flow is proud to present a solo retrospective the Berlin based visual artist Steve Sabella, comprising of a selection of works chosen from three recent series created between 2010 and the present, including samples from 'Metamorphosis' (2012), which will be shown for the first time.
Since 1997, Sabella's practice has illustrated a confrontational relationship with the indexical nature of the photographic image, and the medium's material and technological limitations. In 2008 the artist created his first photo-collages - visual equivalents of the subjectively experienced exilic condition as traumatic - collectively titled 'In Exile'. Though devoid of obvious cultural signifiers, the work is contextually rooted in the Israeli/Palestinian conflict and the immense psychological cost elicited by life under Occupation. Further collage work followed with 'Euphoria' (2010), 'Beyond Euphoria' (2011) and 'Metamorphosis' (2012). As a group they demonstrate a progressively sophisticated formal language capable of eliciting complex emotions, whilst tracing the artist's ongoing journey towards self-understanding.
Steve Sabella (1975) was born in Jerusalem and lives and works in Berlin. He is the holder of the Ellen Auerbach Award (2008) granted by the Akademie der Künste (Academy of the Arts) in Berlin, and was one of the commissioned artists for the inauguration of MATHAF Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha.
Sabella's artworks have been collected by the British Museum in London, Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Ars Aevi Museum in Sarajevo and leading collections in the Middle East including Cuadro Fine Art in Dubai, Salsali Private Museum and Barjeel Art Foundation in Sharjah.
The exhibition will also stage a book signing of Sabella's upcoming Monograph, which looks critically and extensively at his entire career. This book proposes to analyse Steve Sabella's practice both formally and in the light of current critical theory as well as providing an invaluable biographical narrative augmented by a summary of a lengthy interview conducted by the author.
Dr Christa Paula, author of the monograph commissioned by the Akademie der Künste in Berlin, recently wrote: "Steve Sabella's oeuvre unfolds like a book. Its chapters chronicle the artist's journey towards visual and intellectual maturation and bravely investigate his shifting psychological states, narrating a deeply personal individuation process."
