The recipient of the Silver Lion Award at the 54th Venice Biennale and the 2012 Daiwa Foundation Art Prize, Haroon Mirza is fascinated by the perceptual distinctions between noise, sound and music, and the possibility of the visual and acoustic as one singular aesthetic form. He employs video, sculpture, light and sound to create new visual and sonic landscapes which distort and transform our experience of architectural space.
For his second exhibition at the Lisson Gallery, Mirza will show:
A reverberation chamber. For his show in May, Mirza has collaborated with his architect brother Omar Mirza to build a room in the gallery which maximises echoes, creating a disorientating and immersive space. This new piece serves as a kind of antithesis to previous projects like the National Apavilion of Then and Now at the 54th Venice Biennale and New Museum, in which he used soundbaffling foam to deaden sound.
A turntable piece. A second installation features a collection of DJ turntables playing modified records that are fixed at different rhythms; the sounds from each interact at different intervals, combining to create a precisely composed piece.
Some light works. A series of noiseless LED installations creating rectangles of light, which play on the history of formal minimalism.
An LED surround sound sequencer. Eight closely knit cables, each holding a speaker, will fan out from the middle of the ceiling at an equal distance from one another. At the centre of the installation hangs a small red LED bicycle light programmed to flash at certain intervals. The signal is transmitted via wires to the speakers to create an intense and varying wall of sound.
Collaborations with Django Django, Factory Floor & James Lavelle. What initially started life as an interactive digital catalogue to accompany the show has morphed into an engaging collaborative project. Mirza will provide downloadable samples of sounds produced while making work for the Lisson show, which can be taken by musicians and used as the basis for creating entirely new tracks, to then be featured on the website. Dave from Django Django and Factory Floor have already produced tracks which will be pressed to vinyl by The Vinyl Factory, to be released 16 May.
