Sometime in the late 1980s, I started painting a line and have never stopped.

Zitko paints this line on canvases, Aludibond panels, walls, and ceilings. He intuitively lets it flow freely, depending on how he feels and what he is experiencing at the moment. Zitko also transfers his expansive drawings to his panel paintings, on which the networks of lines never seem to end but always extend beyond the edges.

Art critic Jan Avgikos sees this as an expression of rebellion against the constraints of pictorial perception paradigms: “We are witnesses to what might be considered the spectacular consequences of an escape—an escape from the limits imposed by the body, a breakout from the panel painting and its frame, from the two-dimensional exhibition setting.”

Through this ongoing exploration of line, Zitko creates dynamic compositions that blur the boundaries between drawing, painting, and spatial experience. His gestural marks form intricate networks that suggest continuous movement, transforming each surface into a field of energy and expression. Rather than confining the line within a fixed structure, he allows it to develop organically, inviting viewers to follow its unpredictable trajectories and experience the work as an open-ended process.
