In All is not lost, Debra Samdperil approaches abstract painting as a vehicle for discovering ideas rather than illustrating them.

Utilizing a process of accumulation, erasure, and response, Samdperil constructs expressive compositions where emotion, memory, and imagination exist simultaneously. Fragmented shapes emerge and dissolve like half-remembered thoughts, while vibrant color fields serve as both structure and emotional atmosphere.

Bold black lines destabilize and define the canvas, establishing a poignant visual tension between containment and release. Remaining deliberately open-ended, Samdperil's paintings offer a compelling visual dialogue between order, improvisation, and the lingering residue of memory.

Debra Samdperil is a Boston-based painter whose abstract works investigate memory, perception, and the layered nature of experience. Although she was introduced to art early through her mother's painting practice, she initially pursued photography, working as a photographer and educational media producer before building a career in arts administration in Boston and New York. She returned to painting while earning her BFA from Tufts University in affiliation with the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and now maintains a full-time studio practice in South Boston.

Samdperil's work has been exhibited nationally in solo, two-person, and group exhibitions, including Kingston Gallery in Boston, M. David & Co. and Artcake in Brooklyn, the Center for Contemporary Art in Bedminster, Castle Hill Center for the Arts in Truro, MA and Dab Art in Ventura, CA. She has participated in artist residencies and workshops at Castle Hill Center for the Arts, the Judy Pfaff Foundation Studio Residency in Tivoli, NY, Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, and the Montana Artists Refuge, among others. Her work is held in numerous private collections.
