Friends and family four features the unique collaboration of ten artists. Olivia Beens, Helen Iranyi, Judith Iranyi, Lynn Katsafouros, Phyllis Manner, Vera Sapozhnikova, Stewart Siskind, Debra Solomon, Gail Winbury, and Young Ja Yoon have come together to create this exhibition in support of the Carter Burden Gallery’s mission. From the old technique of batik to bright, and vividly colored geometric shapes, many different styles and mediums are represented.

In Friends and family four Judith Iranyi uses the ancient technique, batik, of dyeing fabric using melted wax. Wax is applied to areas the artist does not want to dye, and then the fabric is submerged into dye. By repeating this process with multiple colors and wax layers, intricate, multicolored designs can be made. After the dyeing process is finished, the wax is removed by a hot iron and paper. Iranyi learned her craft in a Montreal sweatshop, where she worked after escaping the Russian Revolution as a child.

Debra Solomon’s recent body of work Off the wall focuses on the patterns, and processes that support and compose all physical matter. Her pieces are filled with bold colors and sharp edges. Her work encapsulates the moments of life that reveal the underlying confluences of matter. To her, these moments and methods are part of one explanation of the universe.
