How did Vincent van Gogh become a world-famous artist? This exhibition explores the vital role his family played and how their private collection grew into an impressive collection of global significance. This summer, discover the story behind the myth. On view from 12 June 2026.
Doubts. Setbacks. Pride. Triumph. The exhibition traces the personal dilemmas faced by Vincent van Gogh, his brother Theo, sister-in-law Jo and nephew Vincent, who later founded the Van Gogh Museum. They safeguarded his work, organised exhibitions and helped build his reputation. Without them, hardly anyone would know Vincent today.
The story behind the myth
See masterpieces from the Van Gogh Museum collection, including Almond blossom and The harvest, alongside lesser-known works. This exhibition is the ideal starting point for your visit to the museum and introduces you to the family behind the myth. Because without the unconditional support of his family, the Van Gogh Museum would never have existed.
After the successful edition Choosing Vincent in 2023 and 2025, this exhibition returns one final time this summer.
