In Modigliani sottopelle. Four masterpieces Amedeo Modigliani’s Nu couché, part of the Permanent Collection of Pinacoteca Agnelli, is placed in dialogue with three other masterpieces by the artist to offer new interpretations and a more articulated understanding of his painting practice. The exhibition project stems from advanced scientific investigations that have analysed the weft and warp of Modigliani’s canvases to reconstruct the origin of the fabric rolls used by the artist, thus introducing a new and valuable method for dating the works. The exhibition, hosted in the Permanent Collection spaces of the museum as part of Beyond the collection series, has been made possible thanks to prestigious loans from the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart.

Through this approach, the exhibition moves beyond a traditional chronological presentation and instead proposes a closer reading of Modigliani’s working process and material choices. Scientific analysis becomes a tool for revisiting established interpretations and revealing connections between works that would otherwise remain invisible, opening new perspectives on the artist’s methods and studio practice.

By bringing together these four paintings, Modigliani sottopelle. Four masterpieces invites visitors to observe Modigliani’s work through both an aesthetic and investigative lens. The encounter between art historical research and technical examination highlights the complexity of his production and offers a renewed understanding of the artist’s relationship with materials, time, and the construction of pictorial language.
