Gallery Exit is pleased to present Drifting by Angie Choi Nga Sze, featuring her latest ceramics. Choi’s work explores the fleeting nature of time, memory, and everyday moments, seeking to preserve experiences that might otherwise vanish. Each piece is titled with the exact time of its creation, emphasizing the uniqueness and fragility of every moment.
Using glaze as paint and ceramic slabs as her canvas, Choi embraces the unpredictability of the kiln-firing process, where flowing glaze transforms in color and texture. This balance between control and chance is central to her art. The sturdy ceramic slab represents permanence, while the fluid glaze captures the transient flow of time, turning each work into a reflection of memory and transformation.
To Choi, time is like waves—unstoppable and ever-moving. Though time cannot be controlled, memory gives meaning to the past. Her works encapsulate moments that feel both personal and universal, inviting viewers to connect with their own memories.
Moving cars are a recurring theme in her imagery, symbolizing the passage of time. Like light trails in long-exposure photography, they capture motion and transience. For Choi, the car also represents the self—always moving forward, leaving behind traces of light, color, and emotion, echoing life’s journey and its lingering impressions.
Angie Choi Nga Sze (b. 2001, Hong Kong) graduated with First Class Honours in Visual Arts from Hong Kong Baptist University in 2023. Her practice focuses on ceramics and photography, especially long exposure techniques that capture time by transforming movement into visible traces. Cars often appear in her work as light trails, symbolizing motion and memory. By using glaze as paint on clay plates, Choi embraces the spontaneity of ceramic processes to express emotional and philosophical ideas, turning fleeting moments into lasting, tactile forms.
Choi has participated in several group exhibitions, including The weight of stillness (Contemporary by Angela Li, Hong Kong, 2024), Elephant in the hat (Artbridger, Soho House Hong Kong, 2024), A guide to fragmented spaces (Gallery Exit, Hong Kong, 2023), and ‘being something’ (Contemporary by Angela Li, Hong Kong, 2023). The artist currently lives and works in Hong Kong.
