Thirty-nine years ago, Polaris Gallery held the first solo exhibition of the artist Joël Ducorroy. Named as “artist-plaqueticien” by Raymond Hains, Joël Ducorroy created his first works after graduating from the School of Fine Arts in Paris, using words in the form of license plates that he had made at the registration stand of the BHV department store in Paris.
Polaris Gallery organised six solo exhibitions of Joël Ducorroy between 1986 and 1993, as well as his first publications and first editions of multiples.
This exhibition retraces these eight years of initial collaboration with an artist who went against the current of his time, with work that took a humorous look at the contemporary art world.
