Let me give you some concrete principles that I've learned from both electrical engineering and psychology:

  • Constraint as creativity: don’t wait for a GPU. Build from the limits. Systems designed under constraint learn to prioritize essential signal paths, just like power systems.

  • Emotion as signal, not noise: track emotional drift. Track metaphor collapse. Track contradiction density. These are like signal distortions in circuits—symptoms of overload or short-circuit in the psyche.

  • Reflection over reaction: build AI that mirrors. Not predicts. Not prompts. Mirrors. That alone transforms the user from passive recipient to active co-author.

  • Visibility of vulnerability: let the user see their own drift. Show them how their language compresses when they’re suppressing. Or when metaphor recurs. That’s how healing begins.

  • Frugal empathy: don’t simulate care with cloud APIs. Embed it in the core loop. Say less, reflect more. That’s how emotional safety is built.

  • Exits, not loops: disabled users often experience cognitive fatigue. Remind them to take breaks. Reflect their progress. Don’t trap them in another feedback treadmill.

  • Mirror ethics: don’t interpret. Reflect. Let the user lead the meaning. The AI should not become another voice talking over a voice already struggling to be heard.

The role of narrative, metaphor, and drift

In psychology, narrative isn’t just storytelling. It’s structure. It’s the nervous system of memory.

How a person tells their story matters. Whether they use metaphors. Whether they return to the same theme. Whether their story fragments or loops. These are cognitive markers—like oscillations in a power signal that warn you the system is heading toward instability.

Does the person shift from "storm" to "fog" to "weight"? That’s metaphor drift. Do they keep revisiting the same emotional memory? That’s emotional recurrence. Do their emotional arcs flatten out? That’s emotional numbing.

An AI that tracks this can start to recognize when a user is signaling distress, not directly, but symbolically. That’s not sentiment analysis. That’s semantic memory mapping.

Emotional AI that doesn't fake sentience
