Acclaimed rapper and Southeast D.C. native Shy Glizzy blends Hip-Hop, contemporary art, and black storytelling in You see where I’m coming from?

A bold and deeply personal group exhibition opening July 5, 2025, at Chela Mitchell Gallery furthering its mission of amplifying underrepresented voices by bringing together a cultural icon, emerging and established artists, and the local community in a transformative dialogue.

Curated in partnership with the innovative art collective League OTO, this exhibition spotlights the potency of art and music as narrative tools bringing together seven gifted artists to explore Glizzy’s life story.

Running through September 6, this unprecedented collaboration marks a powerful intersection of hip-hop culture and contemporary visual art. Each artist interprets a “chapter” of Glizzy’s journey—from his Southeast D.C. roots and rise to fame, to his reflections on identity, resilience, and self-transformation.

My goal is to show people the art world from my perspective. And in order to do that, they have to see where I’m coming from to see where I’m going (it’s going to be a long journey). I want to present the [real] culture by a person who comes from, understands, and is the culture. When the audience sees this show, I want them to have a new respect for art and the artists that are apart of this. But the biggest thing I want people to take away from it is that they can overcome anything and know that all is possible.
