Downtown Los Angeles’ Corey Helford Gallery (CHG) is proud to announce its next major solo exhibition by Toronto-based, award-winning contemporary artist Richard Ahnert. Set to premiere July 19th in Gallery 2, Bad company will be on view through August 23rd.
Known for his vivid anthropomorphic paintings that fuse classical realism with imaginative storytelling, Ahnert’s whimsical animal subjects and scenes reflect on human emotion and the natural world. Balancing playful satire and thoughtful symbolism, the artist’s paintings convey a depth of feeling and luminous detail, inviting viewers into narratives that explore the kinship between humans and animals.
Ahnert’s Bad company explores the fraught, tender, and often unflattering corners of human nature through the familiar lens of his animal subjects. These portraits of flawed moments — private struggles, petty rebellions, and quiet undoings — invite viewers to recognize parts of themselves in the characters depicted. With a mixture of empathy and wry humor, Ahnert captures the uncomfortable beauty of imperfection, reminding us that even in our worst moments, we are never entirely alone. Ahnert’s upcoming show at CHG will mark his third solo exhibit at the gallery, following While we wait (January 2023), Memento (June 2022), and When we met (August 2021).
Open to the public and free to attend, Bad company is set to debut on Saturday, July 19th from 7:00 pm – 11:00 pm in Gallery 2, alongside a solo show by San Francisco-based, award-winning artist/illustrator Eric Joyner, titled Looking sideways, in the Main Gallery and a two-artist exhibit featuring solo shows by Taiwanese artist Lo Chan Peng, titled Gazing at the boundary of beauty and ugliness, and contemporary faux naïf artist Sun-Mi (aka Pamplemouze), titled House warming, in Gallery 3. The shows will be on view at CHG through August 23rd.
