Red Arrow is thrilled to announce, Ex nihilo, a solo exhibition of works by Connecticut based artist Brianna Bass. Ex nihilo, ‘from nothing,’ explores the metaphysical terrain of light phenomena, particularly on a cosmic scale, in electromagnetic waves, the magnetosphere and solar winds, and atmospheric phenomena like lightning.
"Influenced by wave-particle duality and the paradox of perception, I use optical geometry and structured color to hold tension between clarity and chaos, permanence and volatility.
Color arises from a spectrum of waves which are felt, heard, but only seen in a small band to which we are arbitrarily sensitive. Everyday light bends, hinting at the hidden complexity of reality–banality yielding to sublimity. These moments are a metaphor for a world charged with invisible energies, sites where nothingness is broken and the physical world flickers to reveal its cosmological source. This points to a deficit in the modern social condition—collective longing for spiritual depth despite the tyranny of religions cloaked in dogma and violence. Yet light and darkness in tandem, in oscillation, connect us to more profound power, an innate knowledge of both the ancient and the immediate now."
