Explore the unique character of Old Parliament House through its remarkable furnishings in this captivating exhibition. Every detail tells a story—not just about the building itself, but also about the people who worked there and the time in which it was built. The exhibition offers visitors a closer look at the original fittings that shaped the working environment of Australia’s political leaders.
Much of the furniture and fittings were custom-designed for the building by architect John Smith Murdoch. From the chairs in the chambers to the signs on the doors and even the wastepaper bins, Murdoch’s designs reflect a cohesive vision of functionality and elegance. His attention to detail helped create a space that was both practical and dignified, fitting for the centre of Australia’s democracy.
Among the more unexpected treasures on display are a barber's chair—evidence of the long hours politicians spent in the building—and a mysterious marble table said to be used for a game called Kemakko. Despite the intrigue it holds, no one today seems to know how the game was played, adding a touch of mystery to this rich collection of historical objects.
