Jan Coutts was born and grew up in New Zealand, moved to the UK in the early 1990s, where she studied sculpture at St Martins College of Art, drawing at the Royal College of Art and print at Camden Art School.
Culmination of all this learning came later once Jan was established in her own Paddington studio, where her wildlife canvases came to life. She had acquired considerable skills in draughtsmanship, experimented with printing techniques and materials, and in the words of fine art scholar, Viv Levy, this ‘conversation between sculpture, drawing and printmaking served to inform and enrich each discipline in its own right.’
She first visited the Serengeti in the early 1990s. The wild animals of Africa have been the source of her inspiration ever since. Viv Levy writes: ‘the beasts in these paintings are as elusive on canvas as they are in their natural habitat. These are not lifeless portraits. They speak of freedom, power and survival.’
Jan has exhibited extensively since 1993 in London, Glasgow, Paris, Miami, New York, Hong Kong and The Lebanon. Forthcoming exhibition at Belgravia Gallery Mayfair will consist of twenty new works in mixed media, including oil paints, gold and silver leaf, acrylic, oil glazes and resins.
