Spinello presents Gabriel Pozzo’s debut solo exhibition with the gallery, The hero’s journey.
In The hero’s journey, Gabriel Pozzo chronicles a decade shaped by migration, self-discovery, and artistic transformation following his departure from Venezuela. Drawing from Joseph Campbell’s seminal work on comparative mythology, The Hero with a Thousand Faces, Pozzo considers the archetypal hero’s journey through the lens of the contemporary diasporic experience: departure becomes a threshold, displacement a landscape of uncertainty and adaptation, and the search for home inseparable from the search for self.
Drawing from the dreamlike logic of magical realism, Pozzo transforms the rituals of everyday life into psychologically charged scenes. The artist appears throughout the paintings as both protagonist and witness, inviting the viewer into intimate moments of commuting, working, showering, sleeping, and shared intimacy. Familiar spaces become subtly destabilized; reality bends just enough for memory, desire, solitude, and longing to surface beneath the ordinary.
Intimate fragments of the artist’s past and present are woven throughout the exhibition. Lingering memories of Venezuela coexist with experiences of family loss, displacement, and the embrace of Pozzo’s queer identity after leaving home. Rather than unfolding chronologically, these moments surface as recollections, dreams, and emotional impressions, collapsing the distance between the life that was left behind and the one constructed in its wake.
Across the exhibition, the joys and challenges of the past decade become markers of transformation—a period in which inherited and former identities are questioned, resilience is forged, and a more fully realized sense of self emerges. Migration is presented not simply as a departure from one place and arrival in another, but as an ongoing process of becoming. In The hero’s journey, home is ultimately both a place and something constructed within oneself.
