Steve Wheeler: The real thing features a group of intricately rendered works on paper, canvas and wood panel from the 1930’s to the 1960's by artist, Steve Wheeler (1912-1992). The majority of the works on view come from the Estate of Steve Wheeler, who Montanaro Fine Art proudly represents.

This exhibition Steve Wheeler: The real thing, takes its title from an essay written by art critic Hilton Kramer, in The observer in 1997, titled, “The Peculiar Steve Wheeler was indeed the real thing.” The feature was a review of Wheeler’s retrospective, organized by Gail Stavitsky, at the Montclair Art Museum in 1997.

The paintings on view at Montanaro Fine Art’s, Newport, RI location, span over three decades and feature many original and iconic pen and ink drawings featuring Wheeler’s precision and detail.

Subjectivity, these works range from an early self-portrait; cubist-inspired figurative works from the 1940’s; geometric abstractions; surrealist figurative abstractions, to larger oil paintings from the 1960’s.

Steve Wheeler’s fascinating art led him to be known as the leader of the Indian Space Painters; a small group of artists inspired by native cultures, featuring fellow artists Will Barnet, Howard Daum, Peter Busa, along with a few others, who were working in NYC.
