Experience is original consciousness; and in fact we generally say, in the case of experiencing a man: the other is himself there before us “in person.” On the other hand, this being there in person does not keep us from admitting forthwith that, properly speaking, neither the other Ego himself, nor his subjective process or his appearance themselves, nor anything else belonging to his own essence, becomes given in our experience originally. If it were, if what bellows to the other’s own essence were directly accessible, it would be merely a moment of my own essence, and ultimately he himself and I myself would be the same.

Harkawik is pleased to present The other, a group exhibition featuring the work of artists Betty Bailey, Ana Cristina, Lucy Fricke, Namio Harukawa, Wayne Hopkins, Mickey Lee, Titus McBeath, Ian Swordy, Agatha Wojciechowsky, and Cathy Wysocki, opening Friday, July 24, 2026, from 6-8pm.

Another person is never fully given to us. We see their surface, their gesture, but not the interior experience producing it, and what we build in its place is an educated guess: a sense that there is a “someone” there, even though we can’t verify it from the inside. The philosopher Edmund Husserl called this reaching toward another person’s inaccessible experience “appresentation.”

The other extends this problem into the history of artistic practice, looking toward moments and models in which self-expression was not the primary aim of the work, and where communal values, collective meaning, ritual, or dialogue took precedence over an individual artist’s statement. The artists in the exhibition take up this inheritance directly. Some engage the idea of the other as subject matter. Others actively collaborate with another artist, practice, or set of hands as part of the work’s method, letting the boundary of the individual author blur.
